Job Description
The Data Engineer will join Ibotta’s Publisher Data Platform (PDP) team to build infrastructure, support a publisher-facing data marketplace with standards, and enable governed data sharing with publisher partners.
Role Focus
This position emphasizes practical data platform engineering for secure external data exchange. Work includes provisioning and operating the platform, implementing governance controls, and supporting reliable, compliant data delivery to publisher partners through multiple sharing methods.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and maintain Terraform used to provision the data platform, with Databricks on AWS as a primary component.
- Implement robust engineered controls across the data platform to align with data governance policies.
- Develop and support secure external data exchange using Databricks Clean Rooms, AWS Clean Rooms, Delta Sharing, and Remote File Shares.
- Automate audit evidence collection and reporting to support InfoSec, legal, and third-party compliance reviews.
- Identify, design, and implement improvements to platform operations, including automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, and designing infrastructure for reliability and performance.
- Handle incident resolution, participate in workspace health monitoring, optimize cloud costs, and join an on-call rotation.
- Use modern AI-assisted development thoughtfully, with independent validation of code, tests, system behavior, and correctness.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of software engineering experience focused on data platform engineering, external data sharing integrations, or backend development.
- Proficiency in Python and SQL, familiarity with distributed data processing patterns, and experience operating governed data environments.
- Experience with Medallion Architecture (bronze/silver/gold) or similar layered data design patterns, including building big data pipelines for transformation, metadata, dependency management, and workload orchestration.
- Proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams and maintain effective partnerships.
- Ability to understand other teams’ requirements, translate them into actionable technical requirements, and collaborate on project prioritization.
- Experience provisioning and managing cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure) with Terraform and maintaining reusable deployment modules.
- Hands-on experience with AWS and Databricks; practical experience with Databricks Asset Bundles (DABs) is highly preferred.
- Understanding of tenant isolation, clean rooms, data privacy, and compliance requirements in a cloud context, with a focus on secure-by-default systems.
