Job Description
American Express is seeking a Data Engineer I to help design, build, and maintain data platforms and end-to-end processing pipelines. This onsite position in Phoenix, AZ centers on leveraging cloud and big data technologies to support ETL, data modeling, and SQL-based data processing, enabling reliable and scalable data assets across the organization. The role offers a salary range of USD 78,000 to 124,750 per year and the chance to contribute within a collaborative, data-driven environment.
Requirements
- At least 6 months of software development experience.
- Foundational knowledge of cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform, AWS, or Azure, with exposure to services like Google Cloud Storage and BigQuery.
- Familiarity with Big Data technologies such as Spark, Scala, Hive, or SQL.
- Basic understanding of ETL concepts, data modeling, and data processing techniques.
- Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases and SQL programming.
- Familiarity with Agile software development methodologies and the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
- Basic understanding of CI/CD concepts and tools such as Git, Jenkins, Maven, or similar technologies.
- Working knowledge of version control systems and build automation tools.
- Basic understanding of web technologies (HTTP, REST APIs) and comfort with Linux/Unix environments.
- Solid programming fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented programming concepts.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging abilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team.
- Demonstrated curiosity, learning agility, and a proactive approach to continuous learning and process improvement.

Good to Have
- Basic knowledge of Power BI for developing reports, dashboards, and data visualizations
- Familiarity with creating simple data models, metrics, and KPIs to support reporting and business analytics
- Working knowledge of DAX, Power Query, and SQL to develop interactive reports and perform basic data analysis
- Understanding of data modeling concepts and exposure to tabular or semantic models through projects or experience
- Basic troubleshooting and debugging skills for BI reports, datasets, and dashboards
- Familiarity with BI concepts, metadata management, and data governance principles
- Exposure to data visualization best practices and presenting insights clearly
