Job Description
SIEMAG TECBERG is hiring an Electrical Controls Engineer in Newburgh, IN to develop PLC-based control systems for mine hoisting equipment. The position focuses on controls design, Rockwell programming, safety integration, and commissioning activities from Factory Acceptance Testing through on-site Site Acceptance Testing.
This role is centered on building reliable industrial automation for mining applications, including HMI/SCADA development, coordinated motion control, and thorough documentation to support installation, startup, and long-term troubleshooting.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement PLC-based control systems for mine hoist applications using Rockwell Automation platforms (ControlLogix, CompactLogix)
- Develop ladder logic, structured text, and function block programming in RSLogix 5000 / Studio 5000
- Create HMI/SCADA applications using FactoryTalk View for operator interfaces and system monitoring
- Design control system architecture, including I/O specifications, network topology (EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet), and safety system integration
- Integrate PLCs with VFDs, servo systems, and safety PLCs to support coordinated hoist control
- Coordinate with mechanical and electrical teams to ensure control systems integrate correctly with hoisting equipment
- Interface control systems with third-party devices and subsystems using industrial communication protocols
- Design and program safety-rated control systems using Rockwell GuardLogix or equivalent safety PLCs
- Implement safety interlocks, emergency stops, and redundant safety circuits per mining safety standards
- Ensure compliance with functional safety standards including IEC 61508 and ISO 13849
- Perform FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) and SAT (Site Acceptance Testing)
- Commission PLC systems on-site at customer mining facilities
- Diagnose and resolve control system issues during installation, commissioning, and operations
- Provide remote and on-site technical support for troubleshooting
- Create detailed control system documentation, including I/O lists, network drawings, and PLC program documentation
- Develop electrical control panel layouts and wiring diagrams using AutoCAD Electrical
- Prepare commissioning procedures, user manuals, and training materials
- Participate in project planning, estimating control system scope, and scheduling
- Conduct design reviews and support validation testing protocols
- Support engineering staff as required
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related field
- Proven industrial controls engineering experience with strong emphasis on PLC programming
- Experience with Rockwell Automation control platforms (ControlLogix/CompactLogix preferred)
- RSLogix 5000 / Studio 5000 programming experience
- FactoryTalk View ME/SE for HMI development
- RSNetWorx for network configuration
- Strong understanding of PLC programming languages including Ladder Logic, Structured Text, and Function Block
- Experience with industrial networks: EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, ControlNet
- Knowledge of VFD integration and motor control systems (PowerFlex, Kinetix drives)
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical for control panel design
- Understanding of safety PLC systems and functional safety requirements
- Experience with industrial instrumentation and process control
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities
- Excellent communication skills for interfacing with clients and multidisciplinary teams
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet aggressive deadlines
- Willingness to travel to remote mining sites for commissioning activities

Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience with mine hoisting systems, cranes, or heavy industrial material handling equipment
- Experience with Siemens PLC platforms (TIA Portal, S7-1500) as a secondary skill
- Knowledge of mining regulations and safety standards (MSHA, international mining codes)
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent
- Rockwell Automation certifications (Studio 5000 Logix Designer, FactoryTalk View)
- Experience with servo motion control systems
