Electrical Engineer

Responsibilities

• Serve as the technical liaison between the Electric System and the SCADA platform, providing daily guidance to System Operations on advanced SCADA applications such as DPF, SCA, FLISR, VVC, and CVR.
• Coordinate among engineering peers, SCADA, AMI, and field assets to ensure reliable integration and effective day‑to‑day use of these SCADA capabilities.
• Advise and support the Manager of System Operations in switching, SCADA, and Load Management activities.
• Advise System Operators on switching operations, SCADA usage, and load management.
• Assist in developing switching procedures for the Overhead Operating Manual, including emergency scenarios and planned activities as needed.
• Share responsibility for substations, coordinating with transmission owners through design, bidding, ordering, contracting, and construction.
• Track and report on the budget to help manage the organization’s financial position throughout the year.
• Maintain a basic knowledge of construction specifications and methods to assist operations and construction as required.
• Assist the System Engineering Department with the setup, maintenance, and operation of the AMI system.
• Support the System Engineering Department with equipment and controls used by Engineering and Operations, including Recloser, Regulator, Electronic Relaying, and Communications Systems.
• Advise and assist with specialized installations of transformers, meters, and other equipment.
• Maintain foundational knowledge of Power Quality Analysis, stray voltage investigations, frequency spectrum, and interference investigations to assist analysis and communicate findings clearly.
• Assist in engineering studies to monitor seasonal and annual system performance, including voltage drops, fault current, load balancing, and equipment loading; perform case studies on motor starting and other device settings.
• Maintain working knowledge of Distributed Generation Interconnections and Distributed Resources Interconnection Requirements.
• Advise and assist the Director of System Engineering and the Director of System Planning in fulfilling their responsibilities.
• Support the Manager of Key Accounts on items affecting their managed accounts as assigned.
• Contribute to special projects as necessary.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering is required, with preference for power systems focus; ABET-accredited program is required.
• Professional Engineer licensure is preferred.
• Five years of electric utility experience is preferred.
• Two years of experience in protection and control, planning, or SCADA is required.
• Two years of substation construction and project management experience is preferred.
• Experience with NERC, SERC, RFC or equivalent regulatory bodies.
• Some programming experience.
• Drafting and AutoCAD experience is preferred.
• Supervisory experience is preferred.
• Experience with RUS regulations and contracting is preferred.
• Ability to maintain professionalism and composure under challenging circumstances.
• Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record and ability to operate SVEC vehicles.
• CPR and first aid certification, and competence with safety equipment.
• Ability to adapt to a highly flexible schedule due to unplanned service requests.
• Leadership skills and the ability to motivate peers toward goals.
• Strong verbal, written, analytical, and interpersonal abilities.
• Ability to collaborate across departments and reduce silos.
• Ability to quickly dissect and resolve complex problems methodically.

• On-call participation for the Operations Center.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel and Word.
• Reliable transportation to and from work.

Compensation

Salary range: $115,531.78 - $154,523.72 per year.

Education

Physical Requirements

• Participate in SVEC safety and training programs and related courses and events.
• Operate standard office equipment, including telephone and computer systems.
• Willingness to work weekends, holidays, evenings, and other hours during service restoration or heavy workloads, in all weather conditions.
• Maintain access to a functioning telephone or personal device for SVEC communications.
• Work indoors and outdoors; capable of lifting up to 30 pounds; occasional standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
