Forensic Engineer

Industrial Loss Consultants, Inc. seeks a Licensed Forensic Mechanical and/or Forensic Electrical Engineer to conduct root cause analysis for equipment and machinery failures and support restoration of damaged equipment to pre-loss condition. This is a remote, work-from-home position with travel for on-site inspections and report writing with minimal oversight.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform root cause analysis on equipment and machinery failures.
• Determine the extent of damage and identify the mechanical or electrical root cause of failure.
• Provide solutions to repair and return damaged equipment and machinery to pre-loss condition.
• Consult on equipment or machinery damage due to fire, smoke, water, equipment malfunction, or other causes.
• Conduct on-site inspections of machinery and equipment affected by a loss and prepare reports with minimal oversight.
• Provide direction and project management of necessary repairs to equipment and machinery as required.
• Navigate loss sites and climb onto equipment, ladders, catwalks, and other locations where machinery is installed.
• Prepare reports summarizing observations and explaining conclusions.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of five years of experience performing root cause analysis on equipment and machinery failures.
• Experience providing solutions to repair and return damaged equipment and machinery to pre-loss condition.
• Must hold a Professional Engineering (PE) license in the candidate’s resident state; PE license in multiple states is preferred.
• Strong foundational knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, including knowledge of systems such as production lines, compressors, motors, gearing, conveyors, and other mechanical components.
• Ability to identify root cause and extent of damage following a loss or failure event, particularly from a mechanical engineering standpoint.
• Prior forensic experience as a mechanical engineer.
• Strong foundational knowledge of electrical engineering principles, including determining the cause of an electrical event.
• Working knowledge and experience with electrical components contained in production lines, compressors, motors, drives, elevators, buildings, and other equipment and machinery.
• Ability to identify root cause and extent of damage after a loss or failure event, particularly concerning electronic components within equipment.
• Prior forensic experience as an electrical engineer.
• Ability to present solutions to repair and return damaged machinery or equipment to pre-loss condition.
• Travel is required and varies depending on the assignment.
• Ability to navigate a loss site and climb onto equipment, ladders, catwalks, and other locations where machinery is located.
• Exceptional writing skills to articulate technical situations to a layperson audience, combining expert opinion with factual analysis in a structured and accessible manner.
• Ability to compose accurate, concise, understandable reports summarizing observations and explaining conclusions.
• Ability to quantify or estimate repair or replacement costs and conduct supporting research.
• Strong leadership abilities, including guiding teams, coordinating multidisciplinary efforts, and delivering results under tight deadlines.
• Strong leadership abilities include working alone with little supervision while providing timely communication and reports to the ILC customer and ILC Management.
• Excellent time management skills.
• Exceptional verbal, written, and organizational skills.
• Strong computer skills, including organization and file management, and knowledge of Microsoft products: Outlook, Excel, and Word.
• Exceptional attention to detail and maintaining the confidentiality of all information provided.

Preferred (Not Required)

• Strong leadership and management capabilities, including guiding teams, coordinating multidisciplinary efforts, and delivering results under tight deadlines.
• Preferred locations: IL, IN, MI, OH, PA, CO.
• Preferred locations: TX, AZ, CO, or the Pacific Northwest.
• Preferred candidate may live within 45 minutes of a major airport.
• Basic knowledge of electronics (e.g., PLC, Switchgears, Transformers) is preferred but not required.
• Knowledge of validating repair costs is preferred but not required.

Compensation

• Salary: USD 90,000 - 120,000 per year.

Full-Time Paid Time Off Details

• Vacation: 120 hours per calendar year; unused vacation time is paid out to the employee in the first month of the following year.
• Sick: 48 hours per calendar year (unused sick time not paid out).
