Job Description

Ford Motor Company is hiring a full-stack software engineer for the Connected Vehicle Data Team in Dearborn, MI (hybrid). In this role, you will build backend services and APIs, develop frontend experiences for exploring vehicle data, and work with cloud and streaming systems that support large-scale vehicle data flows.

Role overview

You will help deliver REST APIs and microservices, package and deploy applications to OpenShift and Google Cloud, and add reliability-focused observability. The team also uses AI to support vehicle data workflows, including building an assistant experience that can answer plain-English questions about the data.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain REST APIs and microservices using Java and Spring Boot, using SQL databases and BigQuery.
  • Create features and reusable components in React or Angular using TypeScript to help users explore vehicle data.
  • Write Kafka and Pub/Sub producers and consumers, and learn message handling including retries, failed messages, and message ordering.
  • Package applications with Docker and deploy to OpenShift and GCP services such as Cloud Run and GKE, including configuration, secrets, and health checks.
  • Write unit and integration tests using JUnit and frontend test tools (such as Jest or Cypress), participate in code reviews and pairing, and learn test-driven development.
  • Add logging, alerts, and dashboards in Cloud Logging and Cloud Monitoring, and help troubleshoot production issues using runbooks.
  • Use Git and CI/CD (such as GitHub Actions and Tekton), keep dependencies up to date, address issues from code quality and security scans, and follow secure coding, API security, and data privacy practices.
  • Use GitHub Copilot daily for code, tests, and documentation.
  • Support the team’s AI work, including:
    • Building the API and UI for an assistant that answers plain-English questions about vehicle data.
    • Calling LLM APIs to draft metadata, summaries, or release notes.
    • Trying simple approaches for answering questions from team documentation.
    • Writing test cases to verify AI output is accurate and safe.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers, the team’s technical lead (Anchor), product owners, data engineers, and platform teams to plan work in small pieces and ship.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 1 to 4 years of professional software engineering experience (strong internships or co-ops count).
  • Hands-on experience building backend services or REST APIs in Java with Spring Boot.
  • Working knowledge of SQL and relational databases.
  • Day-to-day use of Git and experience writing automated tests (for example, JUnit).
  • Basic understanding of Docker and deploying applications to a cloud or container platform.
