General Engineer - Testing & Commissioning

Opportunity to build reliability in the field. As a Testing and Commissioning engineer, you will serve as a front-line engineering resource supporting transmission and distribution protection and control systems within ComEd substations. This onsite role in Libertyville, IL (North Region: Libertyville, Skokie, Lombard, and Mt. Prospect) centers on commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and outage/work planning, with direct collaboration across engineering, operations, project management, and substation maintenance teams.

What you’ll do

• Commission, maintain, and troubleshoot transmission and distribution protection and control systems inside ComEd substations.
• Perform field testing and commissioning engineering activities for installation of new equipment.
• Troubleshoot, repair, and complete preventative maintenance for existing equipment.
• Create commissioning plans, write livening procedures, and create and run test plans.
• Analyze test results against expected values.
• Lead field investigations for malfunctioning power equipment, system events, and protective relaying misoperations.
• Support corrective maintenance to address identified equipment issues.
• Provide preventive maintenance for protection system components and SCADA.
• Provide leadership by directing and supporting substation maintenance and contractor crews on work tied to these systems.
• Interface with Central T&S Engineering, Work Management, Project Management, Operations, Data Maintenance, and Substation Maintenance to support daily T&S work activities.
• Play a critical role in substation outage and work planning.
• Maintain engineering drawings and manage relay/SCADA database management.
• Provide NERC/CIP audit support and support engineering PM & CM maintenance programs.
• Advocate for ComEd’s Safety culture and apply technical knowledge to promote safe work and enhance customer satisfaction.
• Influence project decisions with moderate impact to the company, including leading employees or contractors in commissioning electrical systems and equipment.

What you bring

• Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or Licensed Professional Engineer.
• Ability to analyze and interpret complex electrical and mechanical systems.
• Knowledge to apply problem-solving approaches and engineering theory.
• Knowledge of engineering designs, principles, and practices.
• Knowledge of complex field test equipment.
• 4-7 years of professional engineering experience (see Note).
• Broad knowledge of regulations, guides, standards, codes, methods, practices, and advanced engineering principles for very complex or unique assignments.
• Minimum of two related career experiences OR Engineer in Training OR 50% complete (by hours) with an advanced technical degree, M.B.A., or Project Management Certification (master’s degree in engineering reduces the OJT experience requirement by 1 year).
• License must be issued by the state in which you are practicing.
• PE License reduces the OJT experience requirement by 1 year.

Compensation and benefits

• Salary range: $92,000.00 to $126,500.00 per year (varies by skills, qualifications, experience, and other factors).
