Job Description
Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Lead Electrical Engineer 1 for Government Services to support technical leadership on projects designing and analyzing new electrical systems for next-generation nuclear science and research. In this hybrid role based in Albuquerque, NM, you will coordinate electrical deliverables across project teams while aligning engineering design work with client, vendor, DOE-related security needs, and licensing requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development of electrical engineering deliverables, including drawings, calculations, and specifications, and oversee other engineers and designers producing engineering documents.
- Serve as the Electrical discipline lead to coordinate design phases for site and facility electrical engineering scope.
- Drive successful project execution to deliver work on time and within budget.
- Coordinate electrical design activities across engineers to support compliance with specifications, codes, and client requirements for installation and operations.
- Provide client-facing leadership by sharing electrical discipline status updates, preparing RFIs, and clarifying scope.
- Prepare and review detailed electrical calculations, including arc flash, voltage drop, fault current, and lighting analysis.
- Prepare documentation for design input required for drawing production.
- Interface with vendors to develop materials and equipment purchase specifications for client recommendations.
- Produce reports and studies presenting technical information clearly, concisely, and in alignment with client requirements and S&L formats.
- Perform independent reviews of others' work, including calculations and drawing preparation.
- Advance your career through peer learning by participating in S&L’s systems of process and Communities of Practice.
- Mentor less experienced engineers through guidance and support.
Required Qualifications
- U.S. Citizenship required; dual citizenship with a country other than the U.S. does not qualify.
- Ability to obtain US Government security clearance.
- BSEE from an ABET-accredited program required; MSEE preferred.
- Currently licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the U.S., with ability to obtain NM PE licensure.
- Must have or be able to obtain the DOE “Q” level clearance.
- 10+ years of experience (ideally in DOE, nuclear Navy, or NNSA) designing electrical engineering systems in project teams, focusing on integrated, detailed system design for new plants and modifications or replacements for existing plants.
- Experience selecting equipment, layouts, materials, and preparing calculations and specifications.
- Experience creating electrical system drawings and designs including low voltage distribution systems (switchgear, transformers, generators, motors, UPS) and communication systems.
- 3+ years leading an engineering design team through all phases of project design.
- Technical knowledge of available equipment and proven pre-engineered systems for systems design and integration.
- Experience serving as firm/client liaison in a lead engineering role.
- Experience reviewing design media created by other engineers.

You are expected to lead others in moving engineering problems from issue to solution by setting expectations for using data and modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs. Leaders in these roles may direct automation and process-improvement work, including approaches to automate calculations, summarize technical documents, and generate design documentation, while ensuring results are checked.
Overseeing engineers who program or script (for example, Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs, is valued but not required. Additional learning such as a minor, certificate, or experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields that supports effective oversight of automation and agentic AI-enabled engineering workflows is also valued.
Compensation Range
$118,023 - $180,313 per year
Location: Albuquerque, NM (hybrid)
