Lead Substation Protection and Control Engineer
Job Description
Build critical substation protection and control systems for 12 to 500 kV projects while stepping into a lead role with real ownership across design, quality, and field support. This onsite position in Framingham, MA offers competitive compensation (USD 107,900 - 195,050 per year) plus benefits that support health, income stability, leave, and retirement.
You will apply engineering rigor to protection and control (P&C) deliverables, guide technical decisions using National Electrical Safety Code requirements and utility-specific standards, and collaborate with design staff to deliver complete drawing packages from early scoping through energization support.
Responsibilities
- Lead and support delivery of substation protection and control design projects, maintaining technical excellence and on-time performance.
- Create and refine relay one-line diagrams that define protection zones and system topology.
- Develop detailed AC schematics showing current, voltage, and protection device relationships.
- Produce DC control and protection schematics to support safe, reliable substation equipment operation.
- Design control panels, wiring diagrams, and physical layouts for efficient construction and long-term maintainability.
- Build accurate BOMs aligned with project criteria, equipment standards, and client requirements.
- Perform rigorous QC checks on wiring and schematic designs to ensure accuracy, safety, and constructability.
- Contribute across the full lifecycle: early scoping, final design, implementation, and energization support.
- Provide technical guidance during installation, testing, and commissioning.
- Apply National Electrical Safety Code requirements for safe and compliant designs.
- Interpret and implement utility-specific standards across all design deliverables.
- Partner with design staff to produce complete, accurate drawing packages for each project.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (or related degree) with 8+ years of substation protection control design experience.
- Experience leading and executing substation protection and control projects.
- Clear, professional communication with internal teams and clients to support project needs.
- Proven ability to meet deadlines and stay organized in fast-paced or high-pressure situations.
- Demonstrated teamwork skills, with leadership ability when needed.
- Self-starter mindset with the ability to take initiative and work with minimal supervision.
- Strong analytical skills and a record of solving engineering challenges independently and collaboratively.
- High level of computer competency and comfort working with engineering tools and software.
- Willingness to travel to project sites and client locations as needed.

Preferred additions (you might also have): Engineer Intern (EI or EIT) certification, Professional Engineer (PE) license, Master’s degree in related field, and field testing or commissioning experience.
