Mid-Level Electrical Engineer (Generation)
Job Description
WSP is seeking a Mid-Level Electrical Engineer (Generation) to join its Power & Energy team, supporting design, due diligence, permitting, and construction for utility, industrial, and commercial power projects with onsite roles in Oradell, NJ and Atlanta, GA, at a salary range of USD 86,100 to 150,590 per year.
Responsibilities
- Develop, coordinate, review, and approve electrical design documents for complex power plant projects.
- Apply advanced electrical engineering methods across all project phases, from initial concept through commissioning support and record drawings.
- Contribute to generation project scoping, budgeting, and proposal development.
- Assist or oversee creation of power plant electrical drawings, including single-line diagrams, breaker control schematics, bus duct layouts, equipment elevations, and cable schedules.
- Assist or oversee preparation of equipment specifications for power and control cables, unit auxiliary transformers, isolated phase bus ducts, generator circuit breakers, and power distribution centers.
- Coordinate and manage larger electrical engineering efforts, ensuring team members understand tasks and deadlines, while tracking budgets, hours, and expenses and maintaining quality.
- Review permit applications, design plans and specifications, standby plans, and contracts; participate in periodic construction inspections to confirm compliance with regulations and sound engineering practice.
- Engage with clients, vendors, and subcontractors to discuss project status and explain engineering decisions and tradeoffs.
- Prepare technical reports and presentations that clearly communicate research, findings, and recommendations.
- Maintain high standards of quality and responsiveness to client requirements in line with applicable norms.
- Develop a client base for advanced electrical engineering services, identifying additional business opportunities.
- Mentor staff to support their growth and professional development.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
- 5 to 7 years of post-education experience as a power engineer delivering design deliverables for capital power generation projects.
- Professional Engineer license required; multiple states preferred.
- Strong proficiency in power engineering principles, practices, processes, and their application to permitting and project work.
- Extensive experience with power plant infrastructure design involving Combined Cycle and Simple Cycle Gas Turbines or Heat Recovery Steam Generators.
- Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and program/construction management, including coordination with mechanical and civil/structural engineers.
- Solid knowledge of electrical codes and regulations (IEEE, NEC, NEMA, IEC) and compliance practices.
- Ability to perform technical calculations, interpret plans, and compare outcomes to applicable regulations.
- Experience planning and conducting inspections and investigations related to construction and design, applying relevant policies.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Self-driven with the ability to interact effectively with clients, regulators, project managers, and colleagues at all levels.
- Capability to work independently, providing guidance to mid-level and senior team members while upholding QA/QC standards.
- Proficiency with technical writing, office software, and discipline-specific design tools: PTW/SKM, ETAP, SES CDEGS, AutoCAD Electrical, Bentley MicroStation, SmartPlant, Revit.
- Experience delivering critical reviews of vendor documents and complex technical deliverables.
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills to derive effective, economical solutions from data and testing.
- Proven ability to coordinate and direct subcontractors to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
- Extensive experience in electrical studies such as short-circuit, load flow, motor start analysis, relay coordination, and arc flash.
- Extensive experience in power system protection and control.
