Job Description

Mead & Hunt is hiring a mid-level structural engineer to support its dams, hydropower, and water resources team in Sacramento, CA. In this onsite role, you will help design and evaluate hydraulic structures, contribute to project documentation, and provide field and construction support from initial assessments through final delivery.

This position focuses on engineering work across dams and related infrastructure, including spillways, canals, pump stations, valve houses, and other hydraulic structures.

What you’ll do

  • Design hydraulic structures and other structural engineering projects, including producing designs and reports for dams, spillways, canals, pump stations, valve houses, and similar hydraulic systems.
  • Perform condition assessments of existing structures.
  • Evaluate and analyze existing structures.
  • Prepare or direct the preparation of plans, calculations, and specifications for bidding and construction.
  • Conduct field inspections of project sites to assess existing conditions.
  • Support construction administration during projects in construction.
  • Act as an engineer in responsible charge, including reviewing, approving, and applying professional engineering seals to final plans, specifications, and reports.
  • Lead projects as a design or discipline lead.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to less experienced team members.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in civil, structural, or architectural engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • At least 6 years of relevant structural engineering experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in any state, with the ability to obtain a California license within 12 months of being hired.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams to deliver construction documents and reports.
  • Experience designing and analyzing hydraulic structures.
  • Strong technical writing skills, including writing reports, specifications, and technical memorandums.
  • Client and project management experience.
  • Experience preparing proposals, including scopes of work, cost estimates, and project schedules.
  • Knowledge of California Building Code, ASCE 7, ACI 318, ACI 350, and AISC 360.
  • Familiarity with Army Corps of Engineers Engineering Manuals related to hydraulic structures and FERC Engineering Guidelines.
  • Experience with seismic evaluations and earthquake-resistant design.
  • Experience using structural engineering software, including finite element analysis and CAD tools such as RISA 3D, SAP2000, and AutoCAD.
  • A Structural Engineer (SE) license is considered an asset but is not required.

Compensation and benefits

  • Salary range: USD 99,000 to 146,000 per year. Actual compensation may vary based on factors including experience, skill set, or location.
