Principal Hydrologic, Hydraulic and Drainage Engineer
Job Description
Join Stantec’s Water Resources & Engineering group in Northern California/Northern Nevada and help deliver stormwater, drainage, and hydrologic and hydraulic modeling solutions across the Western U.S. This hybrid role supports transportation, restoration, recreation, and stormwater projects, with an emphasis on leading modeling and design teams, directing technical reviews, and coordinating model-to-CAD workflows.
This position is based in Sacramento, CA (hybrid) and offers a salary range of USD 141,500 - 212,200 per year. Final compensation is determined based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location.
What you will do
- Lead modeling and design teams for stormwater and drainage improvement projects and/or stormwater/drainage components of major infrastructure efforts.
- Oversee team design activities, guiding hydrologic/hydraulic modelers, engineers, and technicians using modeling software and CAD tools including Bentley MicroStation, Bentley OpenRoads Designer, and Autodesk Civil 3D.
- Direct hydrologic and hydraulic model development, including development, updates, and calibration of models.
- Conduct quality control and independent technical reviews of calculations, models, reports, and designs.
- Lead the preparation of design reports, and coordinate results between hydrologic and hydraulic models and design CAD files and teams.
- Support client work by contributing to proposals, scopes, estimates, and schedules.
- Identify and analyze principal design features and major design alternatives aligned to client needs and project purpose.
- Develop design alternatives for comparison using site conditions, right-of-way requirements, utility conflicts, design standards, and cost.
- Create presentations and exhibits for client and agency meetings, and present at public meetings, client meetings, and interviews.
- Coordinate with interdisciplinary teams, clients, and agency staff, while supporting multi-discipline delivery on multiple concurrent projects.
What you will bring
- Demonstrated experience leading multi-disciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated experience in stormwater/drainage planning and design.
- Experience with hydrologic and hydraulic modeling.
- Self-motivated approach with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Transportation/railway drainage design and hydrologic/hydraulic analysis experience is a plus.
- Caltrans drainage and modeling experience is a plus.
- Ability to creatively apply technical knowledge, with attention to detail and a positive attitude that supports team success in a fast-paced environment.
- BS in Civil Engineering (or related field).
- Minimum 15 years of related work experience in hydrologic/hydraulic modeling supporting civil engineering design, with emphasis on stormwater/drainage projects.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in California preferred, or ability to obtain within 18 months of start date.
