Principal Software Engineer (BM/SRM) (26-464) Space AHT

Northrop Grumman is part of the Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program within the Missile Defense System, supporting layered missile defense capabilities that help enable optimized responses across ranges and flight phases. This role supports C2BMC by developing and maintaining Java-based software for the Battle Management/Sensor Resource Management (BM/SRM) Product Team, with close coordination across algorithms, analysis, design, and software architecture.

This Principal Software Engineer position operates on-site in Huntsville, AL and supports Agile execution within established C2BMC processes. The role requires collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering teams and an active in-scope Secret clearance to begin.

Position Overview

• The C2BMC program enables the U.S. president, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders to plan missile defense operations, monitor the battle, and dynamically control networked sensors and weapon systems to support global and regional mission goals.
• C2BMC supports an integrated approach that networks and synchronizes autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations to improve performance.
• C2BMC is essential for ground and flight tests that verify and demonstrate current and future missile defense capabilities.

Role Summary

• Develop, optimize, and maintain Java-based software applications for the C2BMC Battle Management/Sensor Resource Management Product Team.
• Collaborate with algorithms and software architecture teams, including participation in Agile planning and execution.
• Coordinate BM/SRM algorithmic and architectural improvements with the BM/SRM Algorithms, Analysis, and Design (BAAD) team and the BM/SRM Software Architect.
• Perform on-site work in Huntsville, AL and maintain the required clearance status to start.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain Java-based software; participate in code reviews; create and run unit tests; investigate and resolve issues found during software integration and testing.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to evaluate software behavior, identify performance bottlenecks, and implement efficient, maintainable solutions.
• Actively participate in Agile planning and execution using established C2BMC processes.
• Contribute to development, optimization, and maintenance of Java-based software applications.
• Implement enhancements by improving existing algorithms and software architectures, and identify opportunities to optimize application performance, data processing efficiency, and overall system functionality.
• Work closely with the BM/SRM BAAD team and the BM/SRM Software Architect to translate designs into efficient software implementations and ensure changes align with system requirements.

Required Qualifications

• Current, active in-scope Government-issued Secret clearance at the time of application (required to start).
• Education and experience: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field plus 5 years of experience; or Master’s degree with 3 years of relevant work experience; or 9 years of relevant work experience as an alternative to a degree.
• Experience developing Java-based software applications using object-oriented design principles.
• Experience analyzing, modifying, and optimizing existing software implementations to improve performance, efficiency, and maintainability.
• Experience working with existing software architecture, data structures, and algorithms to build efficient and maintainable solutions.
• Experience across the full software development lifecycle including design, implementation, integration, testing, and debugging in Unix/Linux environments.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to independently investigate complex software issues and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
• Ability to travel infrequently between Huntsville and Colorado development facilities as business needs require.

Preferred Qualifications

• Current, active Government-Issued 8140 certification at IAT Level II or higher at the time of application (examples include Security+ CE, CCNA-Security, CySA+, CND).
• Experience identifying and resolving software performance bottlenecks, including optimization of data processing, memory utilization, and execution efficiency.
• Experience refactoring and improving existing Java-based algorithms and software architectures, including multithreaded or concurrent applications.
• Experience developing software in an Agile and DevSecOps environment, including CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and software integration.
• Experience with development tools such as Git/GitLab, Jenkins, Maven, SonarQube, Eclipse, and JUnit.
• Experience interpreting software requirements, algorithm specifications, and system engineering documentation to support software implementation and integration.
• Experience working in a structured, multidisciplinary engineering environment, including independent technical execution and mentoring less experienced engineers.
• Experience with Command and Control (C2) systems, C2BMC, or the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) domain.
