Location and relocation
Location: Irvine, CA 92614 (onsite). This position is in person at the Irvine campus. Relocation to Irvine before starting work is required. The role may involve international travel, and English/Chinese bilingual skills are a strong plus.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Product and Marketing to finalize specs and review block diagrams, schematics, and enclosure concepts.
- Manage overseas vendors for PCB layout and mechanical tooling fabrication.
- Oversee prototype evolution, PCBA, and tooling samples.
- Diagnose functional or mechanical-electrical issues.
- Serve as the technical gatekeeper for R&D design freezes transitioning to overseas mass production.
- Optimize BOM and component selection in coordination with IC vendors.
- Lead hardware and mechanical validation, including environmental, thermal, and electrical limits, plus reliability testing (mechanical stress, drop, vibration, IP rating).
- Work with international certification bodies to prepare products for global market release.
- Coordinate with R&D, overseas factories, and schedules to monitor the critical path to mass production.
- Align product launch, component sourcing, and design intent with marketing, supply chain, and industrial design teams.
- Act as the central authority for Engineering Change Orders on hardware and tooling/mold modifications.
Requirements
- Technical literacy to bridge conversations between R&D and vendors, with knowledge of schematics and system architectures (MCU/SoC, power, wireless).
- ECAD Tools: Proficiency with Altium, Allegro, or OrCAD to review and verify multi‑layer PCB layouts.
- Lab equipment experience with oscilloscopes, multimeters, and power supplies for evaluating prototypes.
- FFF validation experience including mechanical tolerances, enclosure alignment, button feel, light leakage, and structural integrity.
- Firmware or scripting ability to flash and run diagnostic tests on functional prototypes.
- Component and supply chain knowledge for sizing and packaging (SMD, BGA, QFN) and lifecycle assessment (lead times, second sourcing, EOL risks).
- Hardware validation experience with high voltage testing (HVT) protocols, thermal profiling, stress testing, and power consumption analysis.
- Mechanical reliability knowledge aligned with applicable standards (drop, impact, thermal cycling, environmental chamber testing).
- Regulatory compliance familiarity with EMI/EMC fundamentals and global standards (CE, FCC, UL).
- Engineering document control experience managing BOMs, Gerber files, and releasing Manufacturing Data Packages.
- Technical vendor and project management skills, including milestone tracking (Gantt charts) and root-cause analysis with SMT/tooling factories on assembly quality, out-of-spec, or cosmetic defects.
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering with at least 5 years of relevant experience.
- Strong communication skills to align cross-functional, international teams across time zones.
- Willingness to travel internationally; English/Chinese bilingual is a strong plus.
