Job Description

Dart Controls, LLC is seeking a skilled Product Design and Software Engineer to join their on-site team in Zionsville, Indiana. This role blends analog and digital circuit design with embedded firmware and PC-based software, all aimed at advancing reliable motor control products and thorough validation. The position bridges development and manufacturing, offering opportunities to influence both product architecture and field performance.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safety-first and quality-first mindset across design, development, testing, and support activities.
  • Ensure products meet applicable regulatory, safety, and quality standards.
  • Contribute to design reviews, root-cause analysis, and ongoing process improvement initiatives.
  • Design new motor control solutions and enhance existing platforms.
  • Develop electronic circuits, PCB layouts, and system architectures for AC, DC, and BLDC motor control applications.
  • Construct, troubleshoot, and evaluate prototypes.
  • Perform laboratory testing, validation, and performance characterization of products.
  • Create and maintain engineering documentation including schematics, bills of materials, test procedures, and design specifications.
  • Support the transition of products from development into manufacturing.
  • Provide technical support for existing products, addressing hardware, firmware, and application-related issues.
  • Investigate product failures and customer-reported issues to determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Assist manufacturing and quality teams with product-related technical challenges.
  • Develop product improvements informed by field performance, customer feedback, and reliability data.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation, application notes, and user support materials.
  • Develop, maintain, and support PC-based software used to configure, program, monitor, and diagnose motor control products.
  • Develop, test, and maintain embedded firmware for microcontroller-based motor control systems, including control algorithms and communication protocols.
  • Conduct thorough verification and validation testing to ensure software and firmware reliability and performance.
  • Maintain software documentation, version control, and release processes.
  • Contribute ideas for new products, features, and technology improvements.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and industry trends relevant to motor controls and industrial automation.
  • Participate in strategic product planning and roadmap discussions.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance performance, manufacturability, reliability, and cost competitiveness.
  • Provide technical expertise to support product selection, application development, and troubleshooting.
  • Assist sales personnel in understanding product capabilities and customer requirements.
  • Participate in customer discussions, technical presentations, and application reviews as needed.
  • Help customers identify effective motor control solutions tailored to their applications.
  • Collaborate across engineering, operations, manufacturing, quality, sales, suppliers, and customers.
  • Communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Build productive relationships across the organization and with external partners.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in electronic circuit and PCB design.
  • Experience developing and/or modifying software and embedded firmware.
  • Strong understanding of analog and power electronics design principles.
  • Familiarity with power semiconductor devices such as SCRs, Triacs, MOSFETs, and IGBTs.
  • Experience troubleshooting electronic circuits and embedded systems.
  • Knowledge of motor control systems and industrial electronic products.
  • Understanding of UL requirements and product safety standards.
  • Excellent organizational skills and keen attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and manage multiple projects.
