Project Engineer

CTL|Thompson, Inc. invites applications for a Project Engineer based on site in Bozeman, Montana. The role centers on managing geotechnical design projects, performing field observations, and coordinating COMT services, with the possibility to obtain PE licensure within six months. The position offers a salary of USD 80,000 to 100,000 per year along with a comprehensive benefits package.

Role Overview

The Project Engineer will oversee geotechnical design initiatives, lead project delivery, and support client engagements through technical guidance and coordination with in-house teams. This on-site opportunity emphasizes hands-on field work, project management, and collaborative design efforts to ensure quality results.

Responsibilities

• Deliver engineering services and manage projects using in-house project management tools, while effectively delegating tasks to team members.
• Coordinate construction observation and materials testing (COMT) services, including field staff oversight, scheduling, testing needs, and communication with clients, contractors, and project teams.
• Provide training, mentorship, and technical guidance to staff engineers and field engineering technicians involved in COMT work.
• Conduct field inspections and observations to verify conformity with plans, specifications, geotechnical recommendations, and applicable standards.
• Review daily field reports, inspection documentation, and materials testing results for completeness and accuracy relative to project requirements.
• Perform engineering analyses for residential, commercial, and municipal projects to inform client recommendations.
• Utilize relevant software to support project analysis and design work.
• Collaborate with engineers and architects to develop coordinated, integrated designs.
• Conduct geotechnical investigations for foundations, slope stability, pavement design, and earth retention studies.
• Perform testing and sampling of geotechnical materials as part of project work.
• Prepare project documentation including plans, reports, and client correspondence.
• Log borings for geotechnical studies and manage field and lab testing for engineering analyses and reports.
• Plan field and subsurface investigations and develop proposals and technical reports.
• Review and stamp recommendations, calculations, reports, letters, and plans created by staff engineers for client delivery.
• Develop and maintain positive client relationships and participate in project meetings.
• Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Civil or a related engineering field.
• Minimum of 5 years of professional engineering experience.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within six months of employment.
• Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills.
• Strong computer skills with the ability to learn new software quickly.
• Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and time management abilities to meet deadlines.
• Solid knowledge of current code requirements relevant to the position.
• Experience with AutoCAD.
• Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Understanding of construction means and methods.
• Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities.
• Proven ability to collaborate effectively within a team and make sound, timely decisions on project problems.

Work Environment

The position operates across field environments, laboratories, and office settings with regular attendance. Work involves extensive computer use in the office and outdoor field activities in varied weather, requiring PPE and safety equipment. Client interactions are a routine aspect of project work.

Physical Requirements

• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Eligibility and Contingencies

• Verification of right to work in the United States via I-9 completion and documentation within three days of starting.
