Project Engineer Traffic and Transportation
Job Description
A Project Engineer in the Traffic and Transportation group based in Hamden, CT, onsite, focusing on traffic engineering design, planning, and multi-modal studies across Connecticut.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to craft traffic and transportation planning and engineering solutions for a range of projects.
- Conduct traffic impact analyses addressing multi-modal concerns such as vehicular traffic, public transit, pedestrian movement, street user safety, and parking.
- Develop and apply traffic models to simulate flows and patterns, supporting prediction and mitigation efforts.
- Develop and assess traffic improvement plans to enhance roadway safety and efficiency.
- Design traffic signal systems and Intelligent Transportation Solutions, including Emergency Vehicle Preemption, Transit Signal Priority, and Adaptive Traffic Control Systems.
- Plan roadways and intersections to meet current safety standards while supporting efficient traffic operations.
- Prepare and review technical memoranda and reports, ensuring clear, accurate presentation of findings and recommendations.
- Participate in meetings to share ideas with the team, clients, consultant partners, and other stakeholders.
- Communicate analysis findings, concerns, and recommendations clearly to clients and stakeholders.
- Lead small to mid-size projects or act as task leader to ensure timely delivery, budget adherence, and client satisfaction.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to learning and knowledge sharing to drive collaborative solutions.
Requirements
- 3-5 years of relevant experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
- EIT certification or Professional Engineer license or the ability to obtain one.
- Experience with Connecticut and/or local municipalities and agencies preferred.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Experience in preparing traffic impact analyses.
- Working knowledge of MUTCD, AASHTO, PROWAG, HCM, and ITE Trip Generation.
- Proficiency in Civil 3D, AutoCAD, OpenRoads Designer, and/or MicroStation; knowledge of CTDOT standards.
- Digital Design Environment experience is a plus.
- Working knowledge of traffic engineering and planning software such as Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, VISSIM, and AutoTurn.
- Familiarity with Traffic Signal Design; knowledge of Connecticut DOT guidelines and standards is a plus.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage and meet multiple deadlines.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
