R&D Senior Engineer II
Job Description
Avanos Medical is seeking a Senior R&D Engineer II to lead design and development activities for medical device subsystems within its NPD organization. Based in Alpharetta, GA with a hybrid in-office requirement, this role combines hands-on engineering leadership with cross-functional collaboration to deliver safe and effective medical devices.
Responsibilities
- Spearhead design and development for designated subsystems or product components across every phase of the product development process.
- Create and refine 3D CAD models, drawings, specifications, and tolerance analyses in alignment with design controls and DFM/DFA principles.
- Plan and document design reviews, FMEA, and risk assessments to ensure robust performance, reliability, and patient safety.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Systems, Quality, Regulatory, Clinical, Technical Operations, and Project Head to translate user needs into actionable design inputs.
- Support prototype builds, verification and validation testing, and root cause analyses for design issues.
- Apply engineering fundamentals in mechanical design, fluidics, and electromechanical integration to develop effective solutions.
- Partner with Technical Operations to ensure designs are manufacturable, cost-efficient, and scalable.
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance within the team.
- Support intellectual property development through design innovation and thorough technical documentation.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Biomedical, or a related Engineering discipline.
- 6+ years of experience in medical device design and development.
- Strong proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred), GD&T, and core mechanical design fundamentals.
- Proven track record leading design efforts for Class II or III medical devices.
- Solid understanding of risk management, verification/validation testing, and documentation best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems and deliver projects to completion in a matrixed environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with attention to design documentation and traceability.

Salary Range
The anticipated average base pay range for this position is USD 104,000.00 - USD 121,000.00 per year. In addition, this role is eligible for an attractive incentive compensation program and benefits. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the base posted.
