Job Description
Spectrum Control, Inc. is seeking an RF Automated Test Equipment Engineer to design and implement software-based automated test systems for complex RF assemblies and power distribution units. The role focuses on building scalable, reliable object-oriented software that connects to RF test instruments, helping teams collect data, analyze performance parameters, and support both engineering development and production testing.
Based in Birmingham, AL, this hybrid position includes regular on-site time at listed facilities, with flexibility for remote work one day per week. Occasional travel may be needed to support test system integration and cross-site collaboration.
What you will do
- Design, develop, and maintain automated test software using object-oriented programming, primarily C# .NET.
- Create modular, reusable, and maintainable code aligned with established software engineering best practices.
- Interface software with RF test equipment using standard communication protocols and drivers such as VISA, IVI, and SCPI.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineering, production, and quality to define test requirements, instrumentation, and hardware needs.
- Develop and execute automated test solutions for RF performance parameters including Gain, P1dB, Noise Figure, IP2, and IP3.
- Integrate and control a range of test equipment, such as network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, power supplies, electronic loads, and oscilloscopes.
- Use communication interfaces including USB, Ethernet, Serial (RS-232), and GPIB.
- Manage and maintain the codebase using version control tools like Git.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, including test procedures and software documentation.
- Provide training and support to engineers and production personnel.
- Support troubleshooting, continuous improvement, and optimization of automated test systems.
- Use generative AI tools including Codex and Claude Code to assist with creation and review of software.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in RF test, test automation, embedded systems, or related engineering disciplines (open to engineers typically 5–10+ years).
- Proficiency in at least one object-oriented programming language such as C#, Python, C++, or similar.
- Familiarity with RF concepts and measurement techniques is preferred.
- Experience using generative AI tools to create, test, and review software is a plus.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
