Job Description

The Senior Development Engineer at Johnson Controls oversees the Development Team on medium to large building projects, delivering technical, financial, and risk analyses, developing budgets and energy savings models, and shaping customer solutions while mentoring engineers on onsite engagements in Tampa, FL.

Responsibilities

  • Under limited direction, lead the Development Team to meet department and project goals on medium to large initiatives.
  • Oversee engineering work, field auditing, data analysis processing, and financial modeling during both early and detailed project development.
  • Perform advanced analyses on complex technical and financial elements to realize the full capabilities of JCI bundled programs.
  • Support achievement of business goals by applying the Solutions Playbook and Best Practices methodologies.
  • Establish ongoing partnerships with customers on assigned projects.
  • Guide and mentor Staff Engineers and Development Engineers.
  • Conduct all activities to the highest professional and ethical standards.
  • Provide technical, process, and financial analysis support to the Development team during the design process.
  • Assist in developing the customer business case for conceptual solutions as needed.
  • Lead preliminary and detailed data collection and analysis for medium to large projects in the $5M-$20M range.
  • Build and maintain a detailed development budget and scope.
  • Collaborate with internal JCI partners and external partners to create energy savings models, cost estimates, and scopes of work.
  • Assist in preparing proposals and other customer communication documents.
  • Apply specialized functional expertise as a development team member.
  • Demonstrate high technical competence across multiple areas and assess design risk for large projects.
  • Understand the full range of JCI offerings and their applications in customer solutions.
  • Lead cross-functional teams in developing multiple components of bundled sales.
  • Conduct on-site auditing and data collection at customer facilities as required for design or development tasks.
  • Perform detailed engineering and financial analyses to quantify cost savings and customer benefits.
  • Assist with technical or financial benchmarking as needed.
  • Lead the development of customer baselines.
  • Collaborate with the Governance Team to provide risk analysis for the complete solution.
  • Lead portions of customer presentations to technical, financial, and executive audiences when required.
  • Represent the development team in operational reviews of large or technically complex programs.
  • Create and manage budgets, timelines, and deliverable quality for assigned opportunities.
  • Fully utilize the MyWork platform, SharePoint sites, Solutions Playbook, and other standard JCI development tools and processes.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers, vendors, and facility mid-level technical and financial managers.
  • Stay current with relevant engineering or design standards and practices.
  • Mentor less experienced Program Development staff.
  • Provide post-contract design review support as needed.
  • Actively participate in relevant professional organizations and assume leadership roles within those groups.
  • Maintain applicable professional certifications and licenses (for example, a Professional Engineering license).
  • Promote and enforce JCI safety policies across responsibilities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field.
  • Eight or more years of experience designing or selling building systems, energy modeling, construction, or facility management.
  • Undergraduate experience in building modeling preferred (example programs such as IAC).
  • Function-specific licenses or certifications preferred (e.g., Professional Engineer, CEM).
  • MBA or other advanced degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated subject matter expert in at least 30 Facility Improvement Measures.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to manage development tasks.
  • Fully competent in analyzing and assessing facility mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Proven ability to lead engineering teams, collaborate effectively, pursue results, and maintain customer focus with professional and ethical conduct.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable with customer-facing situations.
  • Solid computer proficiency, including MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Project, SharePoint, building energy modeling tools (eQuest), and benchmarking tools.
  • Ability to travel approximately 50 percent.

Salary and Hiring Details

  • Salary range: USD 100,100 – 150,400 per year
  • Compensation determined by education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and market data
