Senior Engineer, Tailings and Closure

Senior Engineer, Tailings and Closure oversees RTFE duties for Teck's U.S. tailings facilities, with primary accountability at the Pend Oreille Mine. The role leads closure design, dam safety, and long-term stewardship, and requires travel and on-site presence. This position is based in Idaho on a hybrid basis.

Responsibilities

• Establish and promote a strong safety culture, enforcing safety and environmental rules and procedures.
• Serve as the RTFE for tailings facilities across the U.S. portfolio, with primary responsibility for Pend Oreille Mine facilities, safeguarding dam safety, structural integrity, and alignment with closure goals.
• Direct and influence tailings closure design strategies for the Pend Oreille Mine, integrating closure-focused dam safety management, surveillance evolution, water management considerations, and long-term performance targets.
• Provide geotechnical and geoenvironmental leadership for tailings and water-retaining structures, supporting investigations, construction, instrumentation, monitoring programs, and other closure-related field activities.
• Lead and participate in dam safety inspections, independent reviews, and internal governance processes, ensuring findings guide closure decisions, prioritization, and future programs.
• Assess and prioritize recommendations from inspections, reviews, and audits, driving implementation and integrating outcomes into closure planning, capital prioritization, and long-term stewardship.
• Ensure OMS documentation and training programs are appropriate for closure-stage and closed tailings facilities.
• Support management of closed tailings facilities within the U.S. dormant property portfolio, ensuring regulatory and governance alignment.
• Prepare technical, regulatory, and internal reports and maintain clear communication with the Accountable Executive and relevant stakeholders.
• Oversee contractor and consultant management, including scope development, budgeting, execution oversight, safety compliance, quality control, and critical review of deliverables related to investigations, designs, reviews, and construction support.
• Identify, assess, and document tailings and environmental risks across the U.S. dormant and closure portfolio, maintaining tailings risk registers in line with Teck’s risk standards.
• Collaborate with environment, water management, closure planning, regulatory affairs, operations support, and governance teams to ensure integrated closure outcomes.
• Stay current with industry best practices, regulatory developments, and new technologies in tailings management, dam safety, closure engineering, and long-term surveillance.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical, Environmental, Geological, or Mining Engineering, with preferred specialization in Geotechnical or Tailings Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Mine Closure; a master’s degree or equivalent experience is advantageous.
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in geotechnical, tailings, environmental, or mining engineering, including closures-focused work and technical leadership.
• Proven involvement in transitioning tailings facilities from operation to closure, including design development, evaluation of options, and implementation planning.
• Experience with geotechnical and geo-environmental data analysis, surveillance and monitoring systems, dam safety inspections, geotechnical investigations, and project management.
• Track record of working on complex or legacy tailings facilities with evolving or incomplete conditions or data.
• Experience leading external consultants and contractors, with the ability to address deficiencies productively and collaboratively.
• Strong understanding of tailings governance, dam safety management, and the RTFE role within regulatory and corporate frameworks.
• Familiarity with U.S. federal and state regulatory requirements related to mine closure and tailings management, including OSHA, CERCLA, RCRA, and state programs.
• Experience with Washington, Montana, and Missouri regulatory frameworks is a plus.
• OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification or ability to obtain it is preferred.
• Professional Engineer registration or eligibility is preferred.

Pay range

USD 101,000 to 131,000 per year
