Senior Platform Software Engineer

General Motors is hiring a Senior Platform Software Engineer to build embedded software and device drivers for automotive display solutions on Linux-based SoC platforms in Austin, TX.

Responsibilities

• Develop embedded software and device drivers for automotive display systems.
• Implement Linux software features to manage powering, configuration, and activation of display devices and related processes.
• Own work across the software development lifecycle: requirements analysis, design, implementation, testing, and integration.
• Partner with cross-functional teams, including hardware engineers and system architects, to ensure display software integrates cleanly with hardware.
• Collaborate with engineers to improve performance, memory usage, startup time, and power efficiency for high-performance embedded systems.
• Deliver production-quality embedded software by applying best practices in automotive and other safety-critical domains.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in embedded software development.
• Experience with Linux-based embedded operating systems.
• Experience developing or integrating display software, device drivers, or display hardware.
• Strong proficiency in C/C++ for embedded systems.
• Solid understanding of embedded hardware architecture, including processors, memory management, and peripherals.
• Knowledge of communication protocols: Ethernet, I2C, SPI, and UART.
• Solid understanding of Linux kernel frameworks: DRM/KMS, DMA, V4L2, and device trees.
• Experience deploying commercial embedded systems.
• Familiarity with ARM architectures.
• Experience with bring-up, validation, and system-level testing of SoCs and display hardware.
• Preferred: Experience with display interfaces such as DisplayPort, HDMI, or MIPI DSI.
• Preferred: Experience with automotive or safety-critical software development.

Team and Role Scope

• Compute Systems Software team builds and maintains the foundational embedded platform for SDV solutions, including drivers, operating systems, BSPs, and software stacks.
• Display Software team focuses on display solutions for high-compute System-on-Chip (SoC) platforms.
• Work across software services, hardware teams, and SoC vendors to build and manage a shared vehicle compute platform.

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or equivalent.
