Job Description
The Senior Software Engineer will design, develop, and deploy scalable software solutions using Scala and backend languages, leveraging AWS and Kubernetes within Disney Entertainment and ESPN Product & Technology. This role is based on site in New York, NY, and pairs technical leadership with hands-on development to deliver robust media and entertainment platforms.
Responsibilities
- Create and maintain scalable, secure, and efficient software applications using Scala and other server-side languages.
- Leverage AWS components such as CloudFormation, EC2, Lambda, S3, and Dynamo to deploy and manage cloud-based applications.
- Build containerized workloads with Docker and operate services on Kubernetes.
- Architect distributed systems that are fault-tolerant, highly available, and scalable, incorporating event-driven design, microservices, and data consistency considerations.
- Establish observability through tagging, metrics, and logs, and use Datadog to monitor real-time health and performance of applications.
- Collaborate with product managers, UI/UX designers, and DevOps engineers to define requirements, design systems, and deliver features.
- Write clean, maintainable, and testable code, conducting code reviews and mentoring junior engineers on and offshore.
- Address complex technical challenges and continuously seek improvements in performance, scalability, and reliability.
- Adhere to team best practices for the safe use of large language models and propose enhancements when appropriate.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum five years of software development experience, with a focus on functional programming with Scala stacks.
- Hands-on experience with AWS cloud services and Kubernetes for container orchestration.
- Strong understanding of RESTful APIs, Microservices Architecture, and Event-Driven Architecture.
- Strong problem-solving abilities, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
- Experience with Scala using ZIO, Cats, and Cats Effect; also proficient with Java and Kotlin; familiarity with AWS tools such as CloudFormation and Terraform or similar technologies; experience with Istio and Spinnaker; full software development lifecycle including post-release maintenance; Agile practices and version control systems such as Git and Jira.

Salary: USD 148,700 - 199,400 per year
