Job Description

Mozilla’s Ecosystem Services Team is responsible for the back-end platforms that keep Mozilla products and services running reliably at production scale. In this Senior Software Engineer role, you will build and take end-to-end ownership of server-side systems and integrations, including deployment, operations, and incident support, while collaborating with CloudEng and cross-functional partners.

You will help maintain and evolve the cloud infrastructure these services run on, improve reliability through monitoring and alerting, and work closely with front-end and platform stakeholders to ensure backend systems, APIs, and data contracts meet real product needs. The role also includes participation in on-call or off-hours support rotations and periodic rotation into a support-focused capacity for releases and dependency updates.

What you’ll do

  • Lead backend development by building and maintaining server-side logic for services that power Mozilla products.
  • Operate what you build by deploying, running, and keeping services healthy in production rather than handing work off.
  • Collaborate with the CloudEng Team to maintain and improve production environments, including monitoring and alerting using tools such as OpenTelemetry, Sentry, Prometheus, and Grafana.
  • Participate in an on-call / off-hours support rotation to triage and resolve production issues, partnering with CloudEng and support teams during incidents and investigations.
  • Periodically rotate into a support role, handling releases, dependency updates, and incoming work requests from customer support and other stakeholders.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools to move faster and improve quality while applying good judgment about where those tools fit.
  • Partner with stakeholders such as front-end and platform teams to ensure backend systems, APIs, and data contracts align with their needs.
  • Contribute to API design and cross-functional delivery by aligning with front-end and product partners on project goals.
  • Participate in code reviews to uphold code quality and system reliability standards.
  • Join security and privacy reviews to help ensure data protection measures meet compliance standards.

What you bring

  • 4+ years of software development with a strong focus on backend technologies.
  • Strong professional experience with Python, TypeScript/Node.js, or Rust for building back-end services, including confidence leading back-end engineering projects.
  • Proficiency with PostgreSQL and SQL query optimization, including relational schema design and migrations using a query builder such as Knex.
  • Hands-on DevOps experience on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), including Docker-based build and deploy pipelines, with comfort deploying and troubleshooting services in the cloud.
  • Experience with observability and monitoring tools such as Sentry and Grafana.
  • A pragmatic approach to shipping quality work, with sensible trade-offs under real constraints and consistent progress into production.
  • Strong engineering judgment to navigate ambiguity and make sound decisions with incomplete information, including knowing when to ask for input.
  • An ownership mindset with experience operating services end to end in production, including on-call or off-hours production support.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and driving technical excellence across code quality, testing, and process improvements.

Technologies you may work with

  • Python, TypeScript, Node.js, Rust
  • PostgreSQL, SQL, Knex
  • Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Docker
  • OpenTelemetry, Sentry, Prometheus, Grafana
  • AI-assisted development tools
  • Django, Terraform, Kubernetes
