The J. Paul Getty Trust is seeking a Software Engineer for a three-year limited term role with Getty Digital’s Research Applications Development Team. This position builds and maintains public-facing applications that present Getty collections, research products, and scholarship, in a hybrid work environment requiring regular on-site presence in Brentwood.

Location and Employment Details

Location: Los Angeles, CA (hybrid)
Term: 3-year limited term position
On-site requirement: At least one day per week on Getty’s campus in Brentwood
Residency: Candidate must be a California resident when employment begins and live within commutable distance of Getty
Immigration sponsorship: Not eligible for employer-based immigration sponsorship; applicants must have authorization to work for Getty in the United States without sponsorship, currently or in the future

Compensation

Salary range: USD 100,776 - 136,048 per year

Responsibilities

Help design, build, and maintain an ecosystem of applications presenting detailed information about the Getty’s collections and scholarship
Assist in the technical implementation of new features and applications
Participate in day-to-day software development and testing
Help maintain and upgrade existing applications
Perform code reviews and provide feedback to peer developers
Assist in writing documentation
Follow Getty policies and best practices for software development

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or a combination of education and relevant experience
Experience: 2-5 years of software development experience
Experience with a modern JavaScript framework such as Vue.js or React, along with NPM and Vite
Expertise in Python and Flask
Working knowledge of frontend and backend code and coding practices
Experience with Vitest, Playwright, or other unit and end-to-end testing frameworks
Experience with 11ty or other static-site builders
Commitment to web and digital accessibility, including adherence to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)
Experience with Elasticsearch
Experience developing dynamic, data-driven web applications
Experience with RDF, Linked Data, and/or Graph data structures
Experience with the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF)
Deep understanding of museum, library, and archival practice, systems, and metadata standards
Experience building and deploying applications using Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS

About the Stack

The frontend is primarily built with Vue.js. Backend implementations use Python, with data provided via APIs. Custom search interfaces are supported through ElasticSearch.

Getty’s architecture is dedicated to Linked Open Data and uses IIIF to provide access to rich media assets.

About the Role

This position supports the Research Applications Development team for the next three years and also assists with development and support of an existing portfolio. Because nearly all work is public facing, the role involves sharing knowledge with both researchers and the public.

Work may include creating components within a design system, tuning and improving search, building new interfaces, and supporting initiatives that involve Linked Open Data and IIIF experiences (including a custom media viewer). The role reports to the software architect and includes helping estimate, plan, and execute major software initiatives across the Getty. It also involves supporting existing applications and projects, collaborating and mentoring with a team of software developers, and demonstrating best practices.

Collaboration is expected with subject matter experts, UX researchers, designers, and other software developers to build information-sharing experiences across the Getty and beyond.
