Software Engineer II - UI/UX Product Engineering

Microsoft Education is hiring a Software Engineer II to build and ship frontier AI-powered, accessible UI/UX product experiences across Web, Windows, and Mobile in Washington, DC (onsite).

Responsibilities

• Build and ship AI-powered experiences across Web, Windows, and Mobile that help students and educators learn, create, and achieve their goals.
• Run experiments with emerging AI technologies, models, agents, and new interaction patterns, moving promising prototypes into production-quality product experiences.
• Deliver high-quality, responsive, accessible, and inclusive UI/UX with strong UX craftsmanship and consistency across platforms, devices, and form factors.
• Design efficient, reusable front-end systems and architecture to support building, testing, deployment, and ongoing evolution of complex product experiences.
• Partner closely with Product, Design, Applied Science, and other engineering teams to understand customer needs and shape product and technical direction.
• Own features end to end, including discovery, prototyping, implementation, testing, experimentation, rollout, telemetry, production health, and iteration.
• Work across the stack when required, including service and API integrations, data contracts, authentication, AI orchestration and grounding, experimentation, telemetry, and production diagnostics.
• Use AI in the engineering workflow by applying AI-assisted and agentic development approaches for exploration, coding, testing, debugging, and learning while maintaining quality, security, privacy, and responsible AI standards.
• Apply a frontier and growth mindset by sharing ideas, learning quickly, challenging existing approaches, and contributing to engineering excellence and Microsoft culture and values.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field AND 2+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, JavaScript or Python.
• OR equivalent experience.
• Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements for this role.

Specialized security screening: Microsoft Cloud Background Check (required to pass upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter).

Preferred Qualifications

• 3+ years of software development experience building web applications with JavaScript or TypeScript and a modern frontend framework such as React.
• Experience designing, developing, and shipping high-quality software.
• Experience building responsive and accessible web applications using TypeScript, React, or similar technologies.
• Experience with object-oriented applications or services using C#, Java, C++, or similar languages.
• Experience designing or integrating APIs and working with distributed cloud services.
• Experience with public cloud services, including Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, GitHub Copilot CLI, Claude Code, or comparable tools) for coding, testing, debugging, code review, documentation, and developer-workflow automation.
• Ability to evaluate AI-generated output for correctness, maintainability, security, privacy, and licensing considerations, with appropriate human review before use.
• Proven ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues in web applications or online services.
• Effective written and oral communication and collaboration skills.
• Discipline applying modern software engineering practices, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and releasing.

Compensation

• Software Engineering IC3 typical base pay range across the U.S.: USD 102,100 - 202,200 per year.
• Different base pay range for specific work locations:
  • San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area: USD 133,800 - 219,200 per year.
