Software Engineer New
Job Description
Design, build, and improve secure, reliable software as part of a cross-functional product team in a hybrid role based in Sun Prairie, WI (up to 50% remote).
- Own features end-to-end for moderately complex outcomes from refinement through production, including requirement clarification, work decomposition, component and integration design/implementation, automated test development and maintenance, deployment of changes, production monitoring, and defect resolution
- Make implementation decisions within established architecture while maintaining accountability for security, quality, reliability, performance, maintainability, supportability, accessibility, and delivery of assigned outcomes
- Apply strong software lifecycle knowledge across team languages, frameworks, APIs, data access and integration patterns, and development tools
- Use proven engineering practices to build cohesive components, evaluate implementation options and trade-offs, and apply automated testing, debugging, CI/CD, cloud-native development, observability, DevSecOps, and production engineering practices
- Work effectively with unfamiliar technologies or domain concepts by learning as needed to deliver owned outcomes
- Use AI-enabled engineering tools responsibly including Agentic AI patterns and AI agents for coding, testing, analysis, documentation, and automation, with critical validation of results, protection of sensitive information, human accountability, and sound engineering judgment
- Align execution with product and business needs by understanding product goals, client needs, business processes, acceptance criteria, operational expectations, and risks tied to owned outcomes
- Refine requirements with partners by identifying technical implications and constraints, evaluating practical trade-offs, and recommending implementation approaches that balance delivery with sustainable engineering
- Communicate and follow through with clear technical communication, informed recommendations, and reliable commitment delivery
- Contribute to engineering quality through technical design discussions, code reviews, automated testing and deployment readiness, incident response support, root-cause analysis, documentation, and continuous improvement
- Improve reliability and maintainability by identifying design, quality, maintainability, reliability, security, and operational concerns, enhancing test coverage and observability, addressing delivery or production blockers, and sharing reusable practices
- Collaborate across disciplines including software and quality engineering, product, architecture, platform, UX, security, data, operations, and business teams to deliver integrated outcomes
- Coordinate across boundaries by explaining decisions, dependencies, risks, and trade-offs; incorporating relevant perspectives; managing cross-component dependencies; and constructively challenging assumptions when evidence supports it
- Share knowledge and support peers with useful review feedback, documentation, and support for less tenured engineers; seek coaching when needed
- Grow technical and domain depth through continued learning, applying feedback and evidence to improve decisions, and demonstrating accountability, curiosity, trust, resilience, and constructive collaboration
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Professional knowledge of software engineering principles, data structures, algorithms, software design, debugging, automated testing, and the software development lifecycle
- Professional experience designing, developing, testing, deploying, or supporting production software using modern programming languages, frameworks, and engineering practices
- Experience independently delivering software features or comparable technical outcomes using modern programming languages, Git-based source control, automated testing, and CI/CD
- Experience analyzing moderately complex problems, making and communicating design or implementation decisions, and applying secure development, reliability, observability, and quality engineering practices
- Experience designing or operating cloud-native, API-based, event-driven, distributed, or data-intensive application components (preferred)
- Experience with APIs, relational or non-relational data stores, integration patterns, and production troubleshooting (preferred)
- Experience with CI/CD, DevSecOps, observability, automated testing, or production support practices (preferred)
- Experience responsibly applying AI-enabled engineering tools, Agentic AI patterns, AI agents, or intelligent automation throughout the software development lifecycle (preferred)
- Ability to independently design and deliver features, components, integrations, and moderately complex outcomes using established architecture patterns; produce clean, maintainable, appropriately documented, well-tested code through production
- Ability to analyze and resolve moderately complex software and production problems using code, logs, metrics, traces, debugging tools, systematic problem solving, and root-cause identification; implement durable fixes and escalate high-risk systemic concerns appropriately
- Ability to apply design principles to define component responsibilities, interfaces, APIs, data models, dependencies, and error-handling approaches; evaluate trade-offs; and make sound design decisions within established architecture and security standards
- Ability to use source control, automated testing, build and deployment pipelines, observability, development environments, and delivery tools to move changes safely and support production
- Ability to apply AI-enabled practices responsibly in coding, testing, analysis, documentation, and automation while evaluating outputs, protecting sensitive information, maintaining human accountability, and meeting engineering standards
- Ability to communicate designs, implementation choices, defects, dependencies, risks, and trade-offs effectively with technical and non-technical partners, clarify requirements, provide informed recommendations, incorporate feedback, and build trust through reliable execution
- Ability to decompose and organize moderately complex work, estimate and communicate progress, coordinate dependencies, adapt to changing priorities, contribute meaningful code and design reviews, and help improve testing, documentation, operational readiness, and delivery practices
- Advanced knowledge in one or more relevant areas such as application architecture, cloud-native development, APIs and integration, data persistence, distributed systems, security, or performance (preferred)
- Working knowledge of infrastructure automation, DevSecOps, observability, platform engineering, or production reliability practices (preferred)
