Specialty Mechanical Equipment Engineer Sr.

As part of Amentum’s Nuclear Projects supporting the Oak Ridge Group, this Senior Specialty Mechanical Equipment Engineer role focuses on designing and analyzing specialty mechanical machinery used in complex engineering environments. You will contribute to project execution through technical depth, quality-focused work practices, and clear communication with internal and external stakeholders.

This position is based in Aiken, SC with a hybrid setup. The compensation range is USD 110,000 to 160,000 per year, and Amentum is seeking an experienced engineer with 15+ years of relevant background.

Key Responsibilities

• Apply knowledge of specialty machinery design to support engineering work
• Manage scope, schedule, and budget for individual projects
• Ensure all work completed under your control follows established quality procedures
• Mentor specialty mechanical engineers and designers
• Communicate complex technical ideas to management and clients
• Create and review complex mechanical calculations

Required Qualifications

• 15 or more years of experience
• B.S. Engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering program
• Knowledge and experience with specialized mechanical equipment
• Ability to follow Amentum’s established quality procedures
• Experience working within a quality system based on ISO 9000 or NQA-1
• Knowledge of machine design, including selection of machine elements (for example, bearings and seals) and machine controls (for example, hydraulic and electrical)
• Competence using discipline-specific technical software, including SOLIDWORKS, Creo, and ANSYS
• Competence using Microsoft Office software
• U.S. citizenship required (no dual citizenship)
• Valid driver’s license required
• Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
• Ability to pass pre-employment background investigation and drug screening
• Willingness to work overtime or outside normal hours as needed
• Professional appearance appropriate for a customer-facing engineering environment
• Travel required: less than 10%

Preferred Qualifications

• Ideal candidate would have 15+ years of experience
• Master’s degree is a plus
• DOE Q clearance is preferred but not required
• Resident of a commutable distance from the Oak Ridge, TN office

Work Environment and Essential Functions

• Primarily office-based work in a secure engineering environment; an Amentum office location is preferred
• Hybrid or remote work may be available by prior agreement based on role and project requirements
• Occasional exposure to industrial facilities, including elevated noise levels, hazardous materials, or controlled areas
• Site visits may be required
• Intermittent sitting, walking, standing, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, twisting, and lifting
• Lifting limited to 20 lbs; longest distance carried 50 feet
• Hand manipulation required for grasping, pushing and pulling, and fine manipulation; right and/or left hands utilized
• Occasional need to reach and/or work above the shoulder and below the shoulder
• No foot controls necessary
• Must be alert to equipment in the field; occasional travel and working near construction job site equipment
• Potential exposure to hazardous equipment and machinery, uneven ground, dust, gas or fumes, noise, and extremes in temperature or humidity, with potential work at heights
