Job Description

Southwest Airlines is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for Ground Operations’ Workforce Strategy and Planning applications. The role supports development of a modern workforce optimization platform that replaces the current long-term workforce planning solution, with responsibilities spanning design, build, testing, release, and ongoing support.

Role Focus

This position drives workforce optimization product development and technical delivery for large-scale cloud systems. The senior engineer also provides mentoring and technical leadership to support development teams and contribute to the platform’s evolution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive the technical direction and feature roadmap for large-scale cloud systems
  • Act as a technical lead, contributing to and directing development efforts across internal and external team members
  • Determine operational feasibility by evaluating analysis, problem definition, requirements, solution development, and proposed solutions
  • Define feature requirements in collaboration with product managers and customers
  • Support continuous improvement by evaluating alternatives and new technologies
  • Prepare and install solutions by determining and designing system specifications, standards, and programming approaches
  • Evaluate code for validity, structure, industry standards, and compatibility with browsers, devices, and operating systems
  • Mentor Software Engineers through advice, coaching, and training opportunities to develop skills and knowledge
  • Maintain job knowledge by studying modern development tools and techniques, participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining professional networks, and participating in professional organizations
  • Perform other duties as directed by Employees’ Leaders

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information systems, or similar fields, or equivalent advanced-level experience
  • Advanced-level experience with seasoned, specialized knowledge in software development and methodologies
  • Ability to articulate ideas, approach, concepts, options, risk, and impact verbally and visually to technical, non-technical, and leadership audiences
  • Ability to lead multiple assignments, including administrative or project-related efforts, while maintaining successful completion
  • Ability to mentor others
  • Ability to lead ideating, presentations, mentoring, and group-thinking sessions
  • Ability to influence without authority
  • Ability to communicate and interact in English to meet job requirements
  • Ability to use a computer and office productivity tools with sufficient speed and accuracy
  • Maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards in established guidelines
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Ability to comply with Company attendance standards in established guidelines
  • Ability to travel and/or attend Company and non-Company facilities and remote locations as necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong experience with Python, Node.js, React.js, JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3
  • Experience developing REST APIs, microservices, and distributed applications
  • Experience with MicroFront End applications and test automation tools such as Playwright
  • Practical experience with AWS DynamoDB
  • Hands-on experience with AWS cloud services and CI/CD practices
  • Knowledge of relational databases and NoSQL databases
  • Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes

Work Location and Scheduling

Location is Dallas, TX (hybrid). This role allows for voluntary remote work for the majority of working time within the Dallas-Fort Worth area, with occasional on-site presence at the Corporate Campus for training, meetings, and business needs. Limited travel for business purposes may be required.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary: USD 138,800 to 154,200 per year (depending on qualifications and experience)
