Job Description

The Structural Engineer will lead design and project management for cold formed, light gauge steel projects, combining hands-on technical design work with leadership, mentorship, and active client engagement. This onsite role is based in Charlottesville, Virginia, and involves overseeing multiple projects while developing a team of junior professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out engineering analyses and calculations and deliver complete structural designs for projects.
  • Create and review drawings, layouts, and both custom and standard details; revise and assemble full drawing packages for complex designs.
  • Perform field surveys and prepare field reports, ensuring adherence to applicable standards, policies, and best practices.
  • Address reviewer feedback and coordinate with other engineering disciplines throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Manage several projects in parallel, maintaining schedule adherence and budget compliance.
  • Facilitate kickoff meetings, track progress, assess financial performance, and oversee monthly invoicing and collections.
  • Evaluate contracts, scopes of work, and change proposals.
  • Uphold project methodologies and quality control processes.
  • Assist with proposals, bidding, additional service requests, and production of construction documents.
  • Align internal schedules with client expectations.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of junior structural professionals, assign tasks, oversee production, and conduct quality control reviews.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews, contribute to hiring decisions, and maintain project schedules and workload planning.
  • Monitor departmental financial performance to sustain profitability.
  • Develop and maintain long term client relationships, negotiate fees, initiate additional services, and serve as the primary client contact.

Requirements

  • Active United States Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited college or university.
  • Eight or more years of structural engineering design experience, including at least five years focused on cold formed, light gauge steel.
  • Four or more years of project management experience.

Schedule

Full-time, on-site position based in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Compensation

USD 90,000 to 130,000 per year.
