Job Description

Rust Belt Recruiting is seeking a Substation Engineer to lead medium- to high-voltage power engineering design for utility and industrial substation projects across the U.S. This role serves as a primary technical anchor, guiding projects from feasibility through final construction documentation while ensuring design quality, regulatory compliance, and clear client delivery.

Based in the Greater Cleveland, OH area, this is an in-person, first-shift (full-time, exempt) position reporting directly to the company president, with occasional domestic travel for field investigations and commissioning support.

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end physical and electrical design for utility and industrial substations from 12kV to 345kV
  • Prepare complete single-line diagrams, three-line AC/DC elementaries, and station elevation layouts
  • Perform power system calculations, including ground grid analysis, short circuit studies, protective device coordination, load flow, and lightning protection plans
  • Direct multi-discipline engineering teams to produce full drawing packages through Schematic Design, Design Development, and 30/60/90 IFC milestones
  • Provide technical oversight for protection and control (P&C) systems, structural steel layouts, civil foundation coordination, and high-voltage equipment selection
  • Collaborate with clients, executive leaders, and design-build subcontractors to resolve construction inquiries and assess field conditions
  • Support technical proposal development and project cost estimation
  • Mentor junior engineers, assign project tasks, and uphold internal quality standards
  • Conduct domestic site visits and field investigations to document existing conditions and support project commissioning efforts

Requirements

  • BS degree: Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Technology (BSEET)
  • 5+ years of power systems engineering experience focused on 12kV to 345kV substation design
  • Proven experience leading multi-phase engineering deliverables from feasibility through construction documentation
  • Advanced proficiency with tools including AutoCAD, Revit, ETAP, SKM, WinIGS, or EasyPower
  • Working knowledge of NESC, IEEE, and industry-standard codes for medium- and high-voltage substation design
  • Project leadership strengths, with cross-discipline communication and team collaboration
  • Experience mentoring junior engineering staff and assigning deliverables
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license or demonstrated progress toward PE registration
  • Strong problem-solving skills and technical adaptability across complex energy projects

Compensation

  • Salary: USD 100,000 - 120,000 per year + Bonus (commensurate with experience)
