Job Description

Dark Wolf Ventures is seeking a TAK/ATAK Software Engineer to contribute to the mission-critical toolkit used by military and first responder teams. This role is based onsite at the Colorado headquarters in Frederick, with occasional travel to customer sites, and it centers on developing, upgrading, testing, and supporting the TAK/ATAK software suite and its plugins. The position offers a compensation range of USD 80,000 to 100,000 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and sustain software within the Tactical Assault Kit ecosystem, covering ATAK on Android and WinTAK on Windows.
  • Design, implement, and validate TAK plugins, tools, and features that provide real-time situational awareness for military and first responder operators.
  • Collaborate with military personnel, product owners, and engineering teams to translate operational needs into mission-critical capabilities.
  • Deliver software in iterative increments and validate functionality with real-world users during live operations or training environments.
  • Engage with TAK community stakeholders and government customers to ensure plugin and server compatibility.
  • Maintain compatibility with supported hardware solutions by testing firmware upgrades, new functionality, and related improvements.
  • Contribute to secure, hardened software suitable for field use in disconnected and low-bandwidth environments.

Requirements

  • Three to six years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Experience with the TAK ecosystem (ATAK, WinTAK, CIVTAK, TAK Server), with emphasis on developing TAK plugins or extensions.
  • Proficiency in Java, Kotlin, or C++, particularly for Android or Windows development.
  • Strong understanding of geospatial concepts, data formats such as CoT and GeoPackage, and GIS toolkits.
  • Excellent communication abilities.
  • Knowledge of DevSecOps practices and tools, including Git and GitLab CI.
  • Solid foundation in algorithms, design patterns, APIs, and software architecture.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
