Job Description
Leoforce is seeking a Tooling Development Engineer to support safe human spaceflight by designing and building practical manufacturing tooling for New Glenn. In this onsite role in Deltona, FL, you will apply engineering fundamentals, quality thinking, and hands-on technical problem-solving to move tooling concepts through commissioning, while coordinating with internal teams and vendors to balance safety, cost, quality, cycle time, delivery, reliability, service life, and maintainability.
Responsibilities
- Design, create, and release CAD models and engineering drawings for simple tooling in accordance with ASME Y14.5 design and drafting standards.
- Solve technical design challenges across tooling systems, including assembly fixtures, material-handling equipment, rotisseries, test fixtures, structural weldments, environmental chambers, and custom machinery.
- Own tooling project execution from concept through commissioning, including vendor selection, procurement, fabrication, inspection, installation, and proof testing.
- Set and communicate procurement and fabrication priorities to help keep schedules and outputs aligned.
- Define and support repair and rework activities as needed.
- Conduct root cause analyses for nonconformances and implement corrective actions.
- Develop material-handling and packaging requirements to protect hardware during tooling and manufacturing operations.
- Collaborate with component designers, Manufacturing Engineers, and Integration Engineering to optimize overall outcomes across safety, quality, delivery, reliability, and maintainability.
Requirements
- B.S. degree in Engineering or equivalent work experience.
- 3+ years of direct manufacturing experience.
- Experience with tooling design, fabrication, and procurement.
- Proven ability with CAD-based design software for modeling and drafting.
- Experience with Creo Parametric and Windchill CAD/PDM systems.
- Solid understanding of mechanical design and manufacturing fundamentals, including GD&T.
- Ability to create free-body diagrams, identify load cases, and perform basic hand calculations for common failure modes.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, a U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited university.
- Self-directed ability to balance multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Understanding of common manufacturing materials, GD&T, and tolerance stack-up analysis.
- Experience with common manufacturing processes and equipment, including CNC machining, manual mills and lathes, welding, sheet-metal bending, lifting and rigging, assembly, and inspection.
- Finite element analysis (FEA) experience with complex structural analysis; ANSYS Workbench Static Structural is preferred.
- Strong design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) experience, including transitioning products from development through rate production.
