Transformer Design Engineer
Job Description
Custom Magnetics is seeking a Senior Transformer Design Engineer to lead the design, testing, and ongoing support of bespoke transformers, inductors, and related magnetic components from concept through production. This onsite role in North Manchester, Indiana, emphasizes close collaboration with customers to translate requirements into manufacturable solutions while addressing electrical, mechanical, thermal, and cost challenges. The position offers USD 75,000 per year and requires a hands-on engineer with at least five years of relevant experience and a bachelor’s degree.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop custom transformers, inductors, reactors, and related magnetic components.
- Evaluate new designs for electrical performance, manufacturability, cost, and reliability.
- Collaborate directly with customers to create products meeting electrical, mechanical, thermal, and cost requirements.
- Support new product introduction by transitioning designs into manufacturing.
- Test and evaluate first-article production units.
- Develop and maintain automated test programs using Voltech automatic test equipment.
- Design, build, and troubleshoot transformer test fixtures.
- Analyze production rejects and determine root causes.
- Evaluate returned products and perform failure analysis.
- Test engineering samples and accurately record electrical performance data.
- Assist manufacturing personnel in resolving technical and production issues.
- Prepare engineering documentation, specifications, and test reports.
- Support customers by answering technical questions and assisting with product development.
- Participate in continuous improvement efforts related to product design and manufacturing processes.
Requirements
- Minimum of five years of experience designing custom transformers, inductors, or other wound magnetic components for manufacture.
- Strong understanding of magnetic component design, magnetic materials, winding techniques, insulation systems, and electrical performance.
- Knowledge of transformer equivalent circuits, core losses, leakage inductance, parasitic capacitance, thermal design, and dielectric insulation systems.

- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or equivalent industry experience
