Transformer Design Engineer
Job Description
Build transformer and magnetic components for military and industrial power conversion solutions at Espey Manufacturing & Electronics Corp. This hybrid role in Saratoga Springs, NY combines end to end design ownership with collaboration across engineering teams, from specification through prototype, test, and manufacturing documentation. Responsibilities
Lead and partner on transformer and magnetic component design for applications that span from compact to high power systems, supporting both new development and product troubleshooting.
- Design transformers including small PCB mount units up to 5 MVA, including medium voltage dry type, across 60 Hz to medium frequency ranges
- Design inductors and reactors for low and high frequency applications spanning 60 Hz to 500 kHz
- Support design studies for novel transformer concepts focused on high power density requirements
- Develop custom magnetics and create product estimates and design documentation based on customer Statements of Work (SOW) and performance specifications
- Own magnetic component work from specification to design, prototype, testing, and manufacturing
- Interface with drafting to produce documentation packages for production builds, including test procedures and technical reports
- Read and interpret customer specifications, translating requirements into design impact
- Troubleshoot new and legacy transformer builds to support delivery and continuous improvement
- Lead, participate in, and mentor others on magnetic design efforts covering core selection, winding methods, insulation systems, and performance estimates
- Coordinate with mechanical engineers on design reports, review packages, and test procedures and tactics
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent field of engineering)
- Minimum 5 years of experience in transformer and magnetic devices
- US citizenship with the ability to secure a US Government security clearance; applicants must meet eligibility requirements for access to export controlled data

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in ruggedized products for Military and heavy industrial magnetics or power electronic applications
- Experience with magnetics, transformers, inductors, or MILSPEC products for airborne, ground mobile, or Naval applications
- Knowledge of Excel, Solidworks, FEA methods, MATLAB (or equivalent software)
- Demonstrated ability to use unique, custom design techniques without overreliance on auto-generated software programs
- Experience with designs with BIL requirements up to 15kV class and knowledge of dry type transformers up to 5MVA
- Experience with core selection, winding design, conductor selection (Litz/Foil/Solid), loss modeling, and loss characterization in inductors and transformers
- Knowledge of ANSI/IEEE standards and experience with military standards such as MIL-E-917
- Writing skills to release technical reports, test procedures, trade studies, and other technical documentation quickly and effectively to customers
- Comfort navigating complexity and troubleshooting unique problems, with critical thinking, innovation, determination, resilience, and cross-functional partnerships
- Competencies including project management, team leadership, and balancing independence with strong cross-functional collaboration
