Automation Engineer
Job Description
The Automation Engineer role at Rocky Mountain Steel Mills is based onsite in Pueblo, Colorado, and centers on designing, refining, and maintaining the control systems that support highly automated steelmaking and rolling mill operations. This position collaborates with maintenance, production, and engineering teams to deploy automation solutions that improve quality, reduce downtime, and optimize performance across the steel production process.
Responsibilities
- Support automation systems for steelmaking, casting, and rolling mill operations
- Design, develop, and implement control systems, including hardware and software
- Troubleshoot and optimize PLC and HMI installations powered by Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation
- Analyze production processes from scrap melting through finished product to identify improvement opportunities
- Develop operational metrics and integrate plant control systems with enterprise business systems
- Provide ongoing maintenance support and drive automation projects to successful completion
- Assist with project management and offer on‑call support as needed
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Automation Engineering (or equivalent)
- 4-7 years of experience in industrial or heavy manufacturing environments
- Experience with Allen-Bradley PLCs, drives, and HMI systems
- Ability to read electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic drawings
- Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Project, and PowerPoint
