CMM Programming & Metrology Engineer
Job Description
Isembard is building consistent, enterprise-wide metrology capability across its manufacturing network. This onsite CMM Programming & Metrology role serves as a technical authority for coordinate metrology, GD&T, and dimensional inspection standardization, helping teams deliver repeatable manufacturing measurement practices at every site.
In this position, you will establish programming standards, inspection methodologies, and governance processes that support reliable first article inspections, production verification, capability studies, and process validation. You will partner with engineering, manufacturing, and quality across multiple locations to improve measurement capability, efficiency, and technical consistency.
What you’ll do
- Develop and maintain enterprise standards for CMM programming, dimensional inspection, and metrology.
- Define standardized methodologies for inspection planning, program development, validation, approval, and revision control.
- Create repeatable programming standards deployable across all Isembard manufacturing locations.
- Develop best practices for first article inspection, production verification, capability studies, and process validation.
- Drive standardization of metrology processes, work instructions, and inspection documentation across the network.
- Develop, validate, and optimize CMM programs using Modus and other leading CMM software platforms.
- Define robust inspection strategies using CAD models, engineering drawings, GD&T requirements, and customer specifications.
- Create highly automated inspection programs designed to minimize operator intervention while maximizing measurement reliability.
- Validate measurement uncertainty and ensure repeatability and reproducibility.
- Support new product introduction through inspection planning and measurement strategy development.
- Serve as the organization’s technical expert for ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
- Interpret complex engineering drawings and translate functional requirements into effective inspection strategies.
- Provide technical guidance to engineering, manufacturing, and quality personnel on GD&T interpretation and application.
- Build enterprise inspection libraries, programming templates, and reusable measurement routines.
- Evaluate and standardize metrology equipment, software, and inspection technologies across the network.
- Support deployment of new manufacturing sites by establishing dimensional inspection capability and training local personnel.
- Establish metrology governance, including program review, approval, validation, and periodic verification processes.
- Analyze dimensional inspection results, recommend manufacturing process improvements, and support root cause investigations for dimensional nonconformances.
- Ensure CMM systems remain calibrated, maintained, and capable of meeting measurement system requirements, coordinating maintenance, calibration, software updates, and hardware support.
- Improve inspection efficiency, repeatability, and measurement capability through continuous improvement initiatives and Lean methods.
- Evaluate emerging metrology technologies, including optical scanning, vision systems, laser measurement, structured light, and automated inspection.
- Support statistical process control (SPC) and measurement system analysis (MSA).
- Mentor and develop CMM programmers, inspectors, and quality personnel, and deliver training on CMM programming, inspection methodology, and GD&T.

Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Metrology, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent education and experience).
- Minimum 5 years of advanced CMM programming experience in a precision manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated experience developing complex automated CMM inspection programs.
- Strong working knowledge of ASME Y14.5 GD&T.
- Experience supporting aerospace, defense, or other highly regulated manufacturing industries.
- Ability to travel up to approximately 25% to support network deployment and standardization initiatives.
