Job Description

CIS LLC offers a stable, rewarding career in a supportive culture with a 20+ year track record. This onsite role in Harahan, LA centers on energy auditing, modeling, and optimization of HVAC systems for commercial and industrial facilities. The Energy Engineer will focus on commissioning, data analytics, and developing energy conservation measures to boost energy performance and reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed on-site energy audits of commercial and industrial HVAC systems.
  • Evaluate Building Automation Systems (BAS/DDC) for operational efficiency and control strategy effectiveness; identify deficiencies in sequences of operation, control loops, sensor accuracy, and equipment performance.
  • Collect, trend, and analyze field data (temperatures, flows, pressures, run times, etc).
  • Perform Level I–III ASHRAE energy audits as required; document existing conditions and deliver actionable optimization recommendations.
  • Collect and distill utility billing data for consumption and spend; review and validate DDC control sequences for HVAC systems (AHUs, RTUs, CHWs, HW systems, VAVs).
  • Develop improved control strategies to optimize energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and equipment lifecycle; perform reprogramming or provide detailed sequences for controls contractors.
  • Analyze and resolve issues such as simultaneous heating and cooling, improper economizer operation, and poor setpoint management.
  • Implement demand control strategies (e.g., supply air reset, chilled water reset, static pressure reset); utilize trend logs and analytics tools to identify opportunities.
  • Develop building energy models using tools such as eQUEST, EnergyPlus/OpenStudio, TRACE 3D/HAP; calibrate models with utility data and field measurements.
  • Evaluate ECMs including control system upgrades, equipment retrofits, and operational changes; quantify projected energy and cost savings, and ROI.
  • Support M&V activities using IPMVP methodologies; analyze performance of chilled water, hot water, air handling, and ventilation systems.
  • Identify inefficiencies such as short cycling, excessive ventilation, and poor part-load performance; perform load calculations and compare against actual operation.
  • Assess system capacity versus demand to identify oversizing or control issues; develop HVAC sequences aligned with ASHRAE guidelines (Guideline 36).
  • Specify owner project requirements (OPR), control points, sensors, and instrumentation; support design of new BAS/DDC systems or retrofits.
  • Review and approve control submittals, shop drawings, and sequences; participate in or lead commissioning and retro-commissioning efforts.
  • Verify proper installation and operation of controls and HVAC systems; develop and execute functional performance tests (FPTs); identify post-install issues and provide remedies.
  • Provide guidance on system reliability and efficiency; utilize BAS data, cloud analytics, or fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) tools; develop dashboards and KPIs for energy performance monitoring.
  • Conduct ongoing monitoring-based commissioning (MBCx); identify anomalies and implement automated fault detection rules; develop and prioritize ECMs such as setpoint optimization and scheduling improvements.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers, controls contractors, facility managers, and commissioning agents; provide technical guidance during installation, startup, and optimization; support project execution from concept through implementation.
  • Ensure all work aligns with ASHRAE standards (90.1, Guideline 36), local energy codes, and sustainability initiatives (LEED, ENERGY STAR); stay current with smart buildings, IoT, and advanced controls.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems and psychrometrics.
  • Expertise in DDC/BAS systems (e.g., Automated Logic, Johnson Controls, Siemens, Trane, Schneider Electric, Honeywell).
  • Experience with trend analysis and data-driven decision making.
  • Proficiency in energy modeling tools and knowledge of control sequences and optimization strategies.
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE standards and energy codes.
