Instrument Engineer
Job Description
The Instrumentation Engineer provides end-to-end instrumentation and electrical engineering design support for projects of varying size, working under general supervision. The role covers engineering calculations, drawings, vendor and fabrication review, and field or startup assistance as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Use and apply department design and drafting standards throughout assigned work.
- Become familiar with project scope, specifications, and design criteria when assigned to a project task team.
- Identify and communicate scope and design changes promptly.
- Provide on-site assistance during startup activities.
- Create estimate-level preliminary designs and material take-offs aligned to the estimate scope being performed.
- Produce detail design calculations and sketches for materials of construction associated with the project.
- Design for efficient construction material use, emphasizing ease of construction and client expectations for the completed product.
- Check calculations prepared by other engineers for accuracy, code/specification alignment, design criteria compliance, and conformance to good engineering practice.
- Assist the drafting group with routine layout and detailing issues.
- Coordinate with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure timely flow of critical information needed for scheduled project completion.
- Advise senior engineers regarding design or scope changes identified during the work.
- Assist with assembling scopes, drawings, and specifications into a package supporting electrical/instrumentation purchase inquiry activities for procurement or subcontract pricing.
- Review vendor drawings and other discipline drawings to provide electrical/instrumentation input.
- Develop construction specifications and review fabrication drawings and construction submittals for compliance with engineering drawings and specifications.
- Perform fieldwork to gather field data, verify tie-ins, and provide construction support.
- Provide technical guidance to less experienced drafting and engineering personnel.
- Apply advanced engineering techniques and analysis to complex designs.
- Under general supervision, prepare installation details, motor control center single lines, electric room layouts, motor control elementaries, connection diagrams, cable schedules, control panel layouts, and grounding, lighting, power, and instrumentation plans.
- Develop conceptual layouts and cost studies to identify the simplest and most efficient approach for engineering tasks.
- Support interoffice execution through development of small work sharing packages.
