Responsibilities
- Act as the technical expert for the embedded controls hardware architecture technology stack, leading analysis and improvements focused on design simplicity, modularity, and re-use to enable embedded controls hardware capabilities across Thermo King product lines.
- Define and govern architecture standards, including cybersecurity, wireless electronics, and modularity component roadmaps across product models, platforms, and regions, while partnering closely with Product management, Product Platform engineering, Telematics, and Controls teams.
- Evaluate and select embedded controls hardware technologies and platforms. Lead tradeoff analysis and provide recommendations, including creation and presentation of architectural reports to senior management.
- Develop embedded controls hardware design process “standard work” guidance, templates, and tools (for example, system diagrams, calculation spreadsheets, and error checking) to improve cycle time, promote consistency, and accelerate innovation through high reuse.
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to controls hardware engineering teams, supporting design, review, and implementation of controls hardware electronics components.
- Ensure embedded controls hardware meets all functional, security, regulatory (including wireless and cybersecurity compliance), and quality requirements for industrial and transportation environments.
- Travel across regions may be required up to 5%.
Requirements
- Proficiency in embedded controls hardware selection and execution, including PCB design, layout, schematic capture, and use of tools such as Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, and Siemens Xpedition / PADS Professional, with design considerations such as signal integrity and controlled-impedance layer stack-up techniques.
- Experience with microprocessor and microcontroller architectures, including communication links such as CAN and SPI, and how they influence embedded hardware design.
- Experience selecting and designing IoT wireless electronics hardware and related components, including RF as well as analog and digital electronics design.
- Knowledge of radio technologies and standards such as cellular, GPS, WiFi, and BT, including certifications.
- Experience with industrial connectivity protocols including CAN, J1939, Modbus, MQTT, OPC-UA, secure IP-based protocols, and Automotive Ethernet (100Base-T1, 10Base-T1S).
- Knowledge of UML, SysML, or MBSE for system modeling and design.
- Working knowledge of DevOps tools, including GitHub Actions and Azure DevOps.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or a related technical field, plus 10 years of experience.
- Previous experience leading embedded controls hardware development or leading electronics architecture definition is preferred.
- Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills for working in cross-disciplinary teams across software, hardware, and systems engineering.
