Lead Thermal Systems Engineer
Job Description
Trane Technologies is seeking a Lead Thermal Systems Engineer for onsite work in La Crosse, WI to lead concept development, design, and design verification of heat exchanger and fluid flow components for global refrigeration products.
Responsibilities
- Mentor thermal systems and product systems engineers across HVAC design and analysis.
- Lead technology, productivity, and new product development efforts for new components and improvements to existing product function, reliability, and cost.
- Own process and tool development to enable design and integration of new heat exchange components across Commercial HVAC product lines.
- Serve as a heat exchanger subject matter expert and support technical design reviews beyond assigned projects.
- Drive modeling process improvements to enhance performance and reliability, improving accuracy and speed while reducing testing requirements.
- Organize laboratory testing and data analysis for product design and verification.
- Partner with suppliers to obtain component designs that meet product requirements.
- Lead short-duration ad hoc engineering teams to support heat exchanger product and technology roadmaps.
- Collaborate effectively across functional groups including development, production, design, marketing, and suppliers.
- Perform occasional overnight travel, including internationally (approximately 10%).
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and at least 10 years of HVAC or heat exchanger work experience.
- Professional Engineer or Master’s Degree in Engineering is a plus.
- Fundamental knowledge of vapor compression HVAC technologies and components using high, medium, and low-pressure HCFC, HFC, and HFO refrigerants.
- Knowledge of single and two-phase fluid flow for air-to-refrigerant and water-to-refrigerant evaporators and condensers, including ability to develop physics-based performance models.
- Understanding of design, performance prediction, and cost analysis for air-to-refrigerant and water-to-refrigerant heat exchangers, including refrigerant evaporation and condensation processes.
- Strong understanding of computer simulation tools and theory for HVAC system design.
- Quality and customer service orientation in engineering design.
- Ability to understand, condense, and organize technical information to make engineering decisions quickly and efficiently.
- Resilient team player with capability to contribute as a team member or lead.
- Effective communication skills, both written and oral.
- Self-starter with high energy and strong career commitment.
- Ability to make progress by delivering results and completing projects in a multi-tasking environment.
