Job Description

Senior Mechanical Project Engineer guiding the mechanical design of automated fulfillment center initiatives and leading cross-functional teams from concept through delivery within Amazon's logistics network.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and optimize layouts for multiple automated material handling system projects
  • Own the choice and specification of conveyors, third-party equipment, and system components across programs
  • Coordinate with electrical, controls, and structural engineering teams to ensure cohesive, integrated designs
  • Provide strategic direction and final approval on mechanical design decisions
  • Allocate resources and assign projects to engineers based on project complexity and development needs
  • Develop and oversee mechanical engineering project plans, timelines, deliverables, and ways of working across multiple projects
  • Coordinate with internal and external construction teams to minimize layout conflicts and support efficient installation
  • Maintain clear communication with on-site construction teams, clients, and executive leadership
  • Make strategic decisions to resolve complex field issues and project challenges
  • Balance competing priorities across programs and stakeholders
  • Escalate engineering issues and risks to project leadership and stakeholders as appropriate
  • Mentor junior engineers, guiding them through technical challenges and leadership development
  • Support the development of new engineers through mentorship initiatives
  • Review and approve calculations and designs
  • Establish technical standards and best practices for the engineering team
  • Lead resolution of the most complex or novel design challenges
  • Enhance team capabilities through training, feedback, and challenging assignments
  • Conduct performance evaluations and offer career development guidance
  • Ensure all mechanical designs comply with safety, regulatory, and performance standards
  • Implement quality control measures and define design standards across the team
  • Identify opportunities to streamline processes, boost efficiency, and foster innovation
  • Capture lessons learned and apply them to improve mechanical design and delivery for future projects
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives across the engineering organization
  • Represent the mechanical engineering group in strategic planning sessions
  • Process and peer-review orders for mechanical equipment to ensure accurate, timely releases to manufacturing
  • Oversee translation of customer drawings and specifications into fully functional mechanical conveyor systems across programs
  • Optimize mechanical system designs within budget, coordinating across disciplines and managing trade-offs
  • Lead 3D modeling efforts and clash detection across the project portfolio
  • Review and approve 2D customer approval and installation layout drawings
  • Validate spatial analyses of clearance envelopes, egress pathways, and related factors across projects
  • Review and approve system and component level calculations including throughput, motor power, belt pull, and reactive forces to the building structure
  • Provide direction on engineering of custom parts for non-standard design applications
  • Ensure safety regulations and ergonomic standards are applied consistently across all projects
  • Review and approve conveyor manifests with respect to electrical and controls requirements
  • Document engineering decisions through design plans, installation files, and engineering instructions
  • Mentor and develop new engineers as they progress in their careers
  • Resolve escalated technical issues from junior engineers
  • Travel to sites as needed to audit operations, resolve complex issues, and support teams
  • Oversee installation and commissioning activities across multiple projects
  • Develop engineering team capabilities and drive continuous improvement initiatives

Requirements

  • Minimum five years of experience in design, innovation, and research and development roles
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or an equivalent international credential
  • Proven experience applying design, innovation, and R&D concepts in projects
  • Experience managing engineering design projects
  • Proficiency with MS Excel, MS Project, and CAD software
