PCI Level II/III Engineer (PE)
Job Description
Kleinfelder Inc is seeking a PCI Level II/III Engineer (PE) for onsite work in the Bay Area. In this role, the lead inspector (PE) will provide field and plant quality oversight for precast concrete components supporting a transportation project, ensuring compliance with PCI and contract quality requirements throughout fabrication, delivery, and erection.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform advanced quality inspections of precast and prestressed concrete elements, including girders, pier caps, platform panels, parapets, and other structural segments.
- Verify work compliance with PCI MNL-116, PCI MNL-117, PCI MNL-135, project specifications, and approved shop drawings.
- Oversee and document production stages, including reinforcement placement, prestressing operations, concrete batching, placement, curing, stripping, finishing, and handling and storage.
- Observe and verify post-tensioning and grouting activities.
- Conduct or witness concrete field testing (slump, temperature, air, cylinders) and confirm that test equipment is properly calibrated.
- Review inspection reports, test results, and material certifications as appropriate to PE-level accountability.
- Evaluate concrete mix designs, material submittals, and prestressing strand documentation to confirm compliance with contract and PCI requirements.
- Maintain detailed daily inspection logs, photos, and nonconformance records within approved project documentation platforms.
- Coordinate with Contractor QC, Contractor QA, and other oversight personnel to resolve issues promptly and verify compliance.
- Attend pre-pour and pre-erection meetings, quality audits, and third-party inspections.
- Provide technical oversight and mentorship to Level II/III inspectors, and advise the CM team QA Manager on risk areas or process improvements.
- Support and enforce safety and environmental compliance requirements during field activities.
Required Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of California (required or obtainable within six months of hire).
- PCI Level II or Level III Certification (required).
- Minimum 7–10 years of progressively responsible QA/QC or inspection experience with precast or prestressed concrete on major transportation or rail infrastructure projects.
- Working knowledge of ACI, ASTM, and PCI requirements.
- Experience overseeing fabrication QA/QC programs at PCI-certified plants and observing field erection of structural components.
- Proficiency with documentation platforms such as Procore, CMIS, BIM 360, or equivalent systems.
- Strong technical writing, communication, and coordination skills.
- OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour Construction Safety training (preferred).
- Valid California driver’s license and ability to travel to fabrication plants and job sites across the Bay Area.
