Power Generation Engineer
Job Description
Amazon Data Services, Inc. is looking for a Power Generation Engineer to serve as the technical lead for evaluating and developing primary, temporary, and backup power designs that keep AWS data centers operating safely, reliably, and cost-effectively. This onsite role in Seattle, WA collaborates with cross-functional teams to optimize availability across a broad spectrum of generation technologies, from conventional diesel and gas turbines to modern energy storage and microgrids. The position offers a salary range of USD 116,800 to 160,000 per year and requires a strong foundation in electrical engineering.
Responsibilities
- Design and analyze a range of power generation sources to serve data center loads in grid-connected or islanded configurations, including utility sources, diesel generators, reciprocating engines, gas turbines, fuel cells, battery energy storage systems, microgrids, distributed energy resources, and renewables
- Assist in configuring power generation solutions for primary, temporary, or backup applications
- Develop an understanding of the global data center fleet, encompassing existing, upcoming, and unique site designs
- Interpret and develop Single Line Drawings (SLD), engineering drawings, equipment submittals, specifications, and performance data to advance concepts and solutions
- Provide design feedback to Design Engineering for new data centers and to Field Engineering for operational upgrades
- Understand grid interconnection standards and requirements, including microgrid design and controls, and the integration of distributed energy resources
- Manage concurrent projects across multiple geographical regions
- Serve as a leader within the group and across other teams
- Maintain a positive and creative mindset, offering innovative and practical solutions

Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
- Minimum of three years leading power infrastructure designs in complex mission-critical facilities, plus at least three years in design or operational support for power generation infrastructure
- Extensive knowledge of continuous operating redundant electrical systems and power infrastructure, including uninterruptible power sources, medium- and low-voltage switchgear, power distribution units, variable frequency drives, and automatic/static transfer switches
- Experience with power generation equipment and controls, such as diesel generators, distributed energy resources, gas turbines, and battery energy storage systems
- Familiarity with medium-voltage and high-voltage equipment, substation configurations, protection requirements, and integration of on-site power
- Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, single-line and three-line diagrams, P&IDs, submittals, sequence of operations, and related mechanical and electrical drawings
