Power Systems Engineer (I, II, III, or Senior)
Job Description
Power Systems Engineer role providing subject matter expertise in electrical system design, maintenance planning, and operations support.
Responsibilities
- Design or lead contractors in the engineering of the District’s power systems
- Prepare construction and installation specifications for transmission and distribution equipment
- Contribute to the annual capital budget planning for system improvements and additions
- Verify that designs align with established standards and operating criteria
- Coordinate operations and maintenance activities to maximize utilization of power system facilities and meet customer energy demands
- Maintain system models, engineering records, and files
- Develop and maintain procedures and documentation for all systems
- Collaborate with employees from other District departments as required
- Manage multiple concurrent projects with unique demands
- Analyze transmission paths from electrical and rights perspectives
- Coordinate and develop capital and construction work plans and related utility infrastructure projects
- Evaluate and implement protection schemes and practices, including fusing, relaying, arc-flash, equipment sizing/rating, and related studies to improve resiliency
- Promote a positive attitude and constructive culture across the District
Requirements
- Design and operation of three-phase power systems with a focus on protection principles
- Protective relay configuration and operation
- SCADA system design and operation
- Data communications protocols, including DNP3 and Modbus
- Systems configuration management principles
- Power transformers
- Electrical switchgear
- Instrument transformers
- Air switches
- AC and DC panelboards
- Station service batteries and equipment
- Other ancillary system equipment
- Computer system networking principles
- Demonstrated knowledge of power SCADA systems
- Proficiency with AutoCAD
- Proficiency with Milsoft modeling software or similar power system models
- Familiarity with medium- and high-voltage systems
- Legally authorized to work in the United States
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Clear, confident, professional communication with contractors and coworkers (technical and non-technical)
- Willingness to work long hours and weekends when outages occur
- Perform other duties as assigned

About the role
The Power Systems Engineer supports the Engineering and Operations teams as a subject matter expert in electrical system design, maintenance planning, and operational support. This role may be filled at levels I through Senior based on qualifications and experience. Senior candidates will meet all listed requirements; Level I–III may not, but are expected to progress to the Senior level with experience. The position emphasizes collaboration, accuracy, and process improvement.
Where we’re located
Headquarters situated between Casa Grande and Coolidge, Arizona, about 45 minutes south of the Phoenix East Valley. Flexible housing options include the Southeast Valley or closer to the rural communities served by the District.
