Principal Software Engineer
Job Description
Autodesk is hiring a Principal Software Engineer to help research, design, and build construction cloud software products. This onsite role in San Francisco, CA combines hands-on engineering with cloud optimizations, API and UI development, and cross-functional delivery in an Agile environment. You will also have flexibility with telecommuting permitted, and support for eligible travel to projects across the U.S. as needed.
What You’ll Do
- Research, design, and develop computer and network software or specialized utility programs
- Analyze user needs and apply computer science, engineering, and mathematical principles to build software solutions
- Update existing capabilities and develop new functionality across software systems
- Maintain and evolve construction cloud products, including APIs and User Interfaces
- Design software flows that leverage multiple APIs and services
- Ensure program functionality, troubleshoot malfunctions, and modify software to correct errors
- Perform code reviews, evaluate implementations, and provide feedback to improve tools
- Propose cloud-related optimizations and best practices to improve reliability, performance, and cost
- Partner with Product Managers to analyze systems requirements from customers and break them into executable tasks per sprint
- Review new and existing designs for compliance with the latest directives and standards
- Implement high-level designs using robust, maintainable software processes
Full-Stack Delivery and Engineering Support
- Develop and maintain both front-end and back-end systems to deliver seamless, end-to-end solutions
- Integrate front-end interfaces (React, Angular, or Vue.js) with back-end services and APIs (Node.js, Java, or Python)
- Design and consume RESTful APIs to keep data flow consistent between front-end and back-end
- Troubleshoot front-end and back-end issues, including bugs, performance bottlenecks, and server-side errors
- Conduct full-stack code reviews focused on maintainability, performance, and security
- Set up DevOps practices including continuous integration/continuous deployment, monitoring, and automated testing
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related field
- Six (6) years of progressive, post-baccalaureate experience in the job offered or a software engineer-related occupation
- Available to work on projects at various, unanticipated sites throughout the U.S.
- Telecommuting is permitted
- At least 6 years of experience in each of the following skills: (as reflected in the listed full-stack and cloud engineering expectations below)
- Experience deploying and managing full-stack applications on cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) with CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker), and serverless architectures
- Experience with SQL databases, including PostgreSQL and MySQL (schema design, query optimization, and scalable data storage)
- Experience working with product managers, designers, and engineers to translate requirements into user stories and deliver features in Agile sprints

- Starting base salary between $139,000 and $249,260 for U.S.-based roles
Salary Transparency: Autodesk’s compensation package is competitive and may include annual cash bonuses, commissions for sales roles, stock grants, and a comprehensive benefits package. Offers are based on experience and geographic location and may exceed the stated base salary range.
