Job Description

Collins Aerospace (Mission Systems) is seeking a Principal Software Engineer in Cedar Rapids, IA to support the development of advanced software solutions for mission-critical applications. This onsite role focuses on building reliable, secure software and enabling software and hardware integration for demanding customer environments.

The position requires U.S. citizenship and an active DoD Secret security clearance after day 1, along with experience across embedded C/C++ and complex, multi-threaded product code bases.

Role overview

  • Contribute to the development of advanced software solutions supporting mission-critical applications.
  • Work on complex technical challenges that require high reliability, security, and performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including hardware, FPGA, and systems engineering, to integrate innovative technologies across a wide range of product lines.
  • Enable secure communications, data exchange, and other critical capabilities for customers operating in demanding environments.
  • Participate in key decision making to support successful application development across multiple product lines.
  • Support requirements definition, software design and architecture, implementation, software/hardware integration, and requirement verification.

Required qualifications

  • Software development and integration experience with embedded C and C++ product software.
  • Experience with complex multi-threaded product software code bases.
  • Experience applying standard full lifecycle software development practices and configuration management tools.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in embedded security software development and integration.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government-issued security clearance.
  • Typically requires a STEM degree (or advanced degree in a related field) and minimum experience: 8 years prior relevant experience (or 5 years with an Advanced Degree).

Preferred qualifications

  • Cost account management.
  • Experience serving as a Product Owner in an Agile development environment.
  • Experience in Rust development.
  • Comfortable working in a Linux development environment.
  • Ability to mentor engineers on software development skills and practices.
  • Desire to collaborate effectively in a team setting, building relationships in person and through technology; experience working on an Agile team is desirable.
  • Track record of producing strong results while keeping milestones on schedule and driving process efficiency improvements.
  • Experience leading teams and running projects through the full software lifecycle.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as python.

Security clearance requirements

  • Salary: USD 107,500 - 204,500 per year
