Job Description

The Relay P&C Project Engineer role at Ampirical is an on-site position in Metairie, LA, focused on supporting EPC and substation projects from medium voltage through extra-high voltage. The role serves as the primary interface between construction and design engineering to ensure protection and control system designs align with project standards. Travel to client sites is required, totaling about 10% of the time.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the main point of contact for EPC efforts during estimating, construction, and testing phases.
  • Maintain and cultivate relationships with alliance clients.
  • Communicate clearly and confidently with clients, subcontractors, and internal teams.
  • Respond promptly to field and client inquiries.
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of detailed design and construction of utility substations (MV through EHV) with a focus on protection and control systems, including one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, SCADA, communications, AC and DC station service, cable sizing and routing, instrument transformers, circuit breakers, power transformers, and autotransformers.
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of substation physical and electrical layouts, equipment specifications, general arrangement, grounding, and outdoor bus design.
  • Review RFPs and assist in ensuring engineering estimates are complete and accurate; when applicable, review subcontractor estimates for accuracy.
  • Lead and support pre-construction design package review meetings with clients and subcontractors.
  • Conduct project site walks as needed to verify that engineering design packages are properly executed during construction.
  • Assist in developing project proposals, bid packages, schedules, and bills of materials for assigned projects as required.
  • Perform quality reviews of engineering work for internal assets and subcontractors on assigned projects when necessary.
  • Analyze technical issues quickly and develop solutions that minimize impact on schedule and budget.
  • Support the team in delivering quality work on time and within budget.
  • Present technical topics to small groups with varying levels of experience.
  • Travel to meet with clients and conduct professional meetings, approximately 10% of the time.
  • Prioritize work and manage tasks across multiple projects under budget and time constraints.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited institution; Electrical Engineering (BSEE) preferred.
  • Minimum seven years of experience with a Professional Engineer (PE) license; or nine or more years of experience without a PE.
  • Proven track record in the utility industry with both design-only and EPC projects and all aspects of Relay Protection and Control.
  • Demonstrated experience with complex engineering projects.
  • High level of personal initiative and the ability to interact professionally with personnel, clients, and contractors.
