Job Description

Powell Industries is seeking a Senior Electrical Power Applications Engineer for an onsite role in Houston, TX. This position focuses on evaluating project costs and resources, reviewing specifications and drawings, coordinating with stakeholders, and preparing cost estimates and proposals to support accurate budgeting and pricing. Responsibilities

  • Review customer specifications to determine Powell's ability to manufacture or supply the solution.
  • Interpret electrical drawings including single-line and multi-line diagrams, elevations, control schematics, site plans and enclosure layouts.
  • Prepare accurate proposals based on the reviewed documentation and interpretation.
  • Identify application concerns early and communicate them before the proposal is developed.
  • Translate customer concepts into a concrete proposal.
  • Refine the proposed solution to maximize value for Powell and the customer.
  • Document clear notes to define Powell's offering.
  • Serve as the technical resource for Powell's Sales team.
  • Support sales in internal and external technical discussions and solutions.
  • Evaluate competitive subcontractor proposals used to complete the Powell offering.
  • Assess risk associated with subcontractor options.
  • Collaborate with other Powell divisions to develop cross‑business solutions.
  • Operate with minimal supervision.
  • Project scope ranges from average to complex.
  • May lead projects requiring coordination across multiple application engineers.
  • Participate in sales and marketing activities, including client meetings and conferences.
  • Contribute to cost reduction initiatives with engineering and operations teams.
  • Conduct analytical or competitive market studies as needed.
  • Contribute to the development of new and existing product specifications.
  • Prepare detailed, accurate, and cost-competitive proposals.
  • Participate in external customer facing activities, approximately 10% of the time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum four years of experience in electrical equipment estimating or a related field.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of electrical theory and standards including IEEE/ANSI, NEC, IBC and NFPA.
  • Practical knowledge of low and medium voltage distribution equipment ratings and design.
  • Practical knowledge of DC systems, UPS systems, HVAC and pressurization.
  • Knowledge of interconnects, conduit and cable schedules.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical specifications.
  • Ability to read electrical drawings including single-line and multi-line diagrams, schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Customer oriented.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong planning and time management, with the ability to set goals, allocate resources, and meet deadlines.
  • Analytical problem solving with a logical, methodical, and systematic approach.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and take on additional responsibilities.
  • Experience with Visio, AutoCAD and Inventor.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Working Conditions

  • Temperature controlled office environment; some outside activities may be required.
