Job Description
Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer role in Research Triangle Park, NC (hybrid) with travel, serving as technical owner for complex projects.
Responsibilities
- Provide project leadership, directing the project team, delegating work, and tracking action items
- Exercise technical oversight by reviewing details, assisting with work breakdown structures and budgets, and managing project risk
- Create and review engineering deliverables including P&IDs, instrument datasheets, PLC/DCS card-edge drawings, loop sheets, electrical conduit schedules, and control panel designs
- Support projects through all life cycle phases from pre-bid walkdowns and cost estimates to startup, commissioning, and IQ/OQ validation
- Develop and review PLC/DCS programming, SCADA/HMI graphics, and other software interfaces
- Propose modernization or replacement solutions for existing control systems as part of system evaluation
Qualifications & Education
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering (or closely related discipline); equivalent experience considered
- Minimum 5 years of project leadership experience
- Minimum 5 years of automation engineering or systems integration experience
- Experience in process-based industries such as Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals, or Food and Beverage
Technical Skills
- Experience with PLC/DCS systems, with preference for Allen-Bradley, Siemens, and Emerson DeltaV
- Familiarity with motor controls (VFDs, MCCs), instrumentation, and valves
- Knowledge of NEC Section 500 (Hazardous Areas) and NFPA 70E (Electrical Safety)
- Ability to provide clear redlines for CAD designers
- Certifications: PE license or EIT preferred but not required
